🎯🎯THIS IS EXACTLY WHY FEVER FANS ARE STARTING TO QUESTION EVERYTHING.
Caitlin Clark finally climbs to #1 IN THE WNBA IN ASSISTS. She’s averaging around 9 APG, controlling the offense, dictating pace and looking like the elite playmaker we KNOW she is.
Then what happens?
The VERY NEXT GAMES, Indiana starts taking the ball out of her hands and the offense suddenly feels more concerned with preserving a 20-point scoring streak than allowing its point guard to orchestrate.
Now Clark is back to #2 in assists.
And who moved back ahead of her?
Alyssa Thomas.
The same Alyssa Thomas who played for Stephanie White in Connecticut.
I’m NOT claiming Stephanie White intentionally sabotaged Caitlin Clark’s assist lead—that would require evidence I don’t have.
But GOOD LORD, THE OPTICS ARE TERRIBLE.
Clark reaches #1 → immediately gets fewer opportunities initiating the offense → Thomas retakes #1.
You want Fever fans to stop questioning the coaching staff?
THEN STOP GIVING THEM REASONS TO QUESTION IT.
This is bigger than an assist title. It’s about recognizing what makes your offense special.
You have arguably the most dangerous playmaking guard in basketball.
PUT. THE. BALL. IN. HER. HANDS.
Because at this point, I completely understand why fans are demanding changes FROM THE TOP OF THIS ORGANIZATION TO THE BOTTOM.
🏀I WENT BACK AND CHARTED THE FILM. NOW I HAVE A SERIOUS QUESTION FOR THE WNBA.
I didn’t want opinions. I didn’t want narratives. I wanted to see it possession by possession.
So I rewatched Indiana vs. New York and charted the contact on Caitlin Clark myself.
And I DIDN’T EVEN FINISH THE 4TH QUARTER.
My film chart:
63% of the possessions I tracked with Clark handling the basketball featured what I graded as a hand-check, grab, pull or bump.
54% featured contact I graded as a defensive foul.
I counted 82+ separate instances of illegal contact.
On ONE POSSESSION, I counted 11 separate contacts that could’ve been whistled.
Now here’s the punchline:
Caitlin Clark officially went to the free-throw line FOUR TIMES.
FOUR. 🤣
So somebody at @WNBA needs to explain something to me.
Either New York suddenly assembled the greatest collection of perimeter defenders basketball has ever witnessed…
OR CAITLIN CLARK IS BEING OFFICIATED UNDER A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STANDARD.
Because you cannot pick somebody up 94 feet, face-guard her, chase her through screens, hand-check her, grab her hip, redirect her movement and bump her off her path possession after possession and convince me that almost all of it is legal defense.
At some point, when the SAME PLAYER repeatedly receives this kind of physical treatment without a proportional whistle, people are going to start asking whether this is incompetence…
OR AN AGENDA.
And THAT is the conversation the national media seems terrified to have.
@espn@espnW@WNBA — ROLL THE FILM.
Don’t show me Clark complaining afterward.
Don’t show me her facial expressions.
Don’t debate whether she needs to “control her emotions.”
SHOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER BEFORE SHE REACTED.
Because after charting this game possession by possession, I’m convinced the biggest Caitlin Clark officiating controversy isn’t the fouls they call.
IT’S THE ABSURD NUMBER THEY DON’T.
🎥 WATCH THE CONTACT. COUNT IT YOURSELF. THEN TELL ME I’M WRONG.
@IndianaFever #feverrising
🚨 I’M DONE SUGARCOATING WHAT I’M WATCHING WITH THE INDIANA FEVER. 🚨
Some people are going to HATE this, but after Fever-Liberty, somebody needs to say it:
1. ALIYAH BOSTON — THIS IS NOT MAX-PLAYER BASKETBALL.
The interior defense has been ATROCIOUS. Bigs are catching the ball underneath the damn rim. Add the missed bunnies, shaky footwork and rebounds slipping away — what exactly are we paying max money for? THE STANDARD HAS TO BE HIGHER.
2. STEPHANIE WHITE’S 2-3 ZONE WAS COACHING MALPRACTICE.
New York puts FOUR dangerous shooters on the floor and Indiana decides to sit in a ZONE?! Then watches THREE AFTER THREE AFTER THREE drop and STAYS IN IT.
SIX THREES AND YOU STILL DON’T CHANGE THE DAMN DEFENSE?! WHAT ARE WE PRACTICING?!
3. THE KELSEY MITCHELL OFFENSE IS BECOMING PAINFUL TO WATCH.
Too many possessions are turning into dribble… dribble… dribble… head down… shot. The extra pass disappears. The ball movement dies. Everybody looks like they’re hunting THEIR offense instead of THE offense.
And now for the part that’s REALLY going to piss people off:
4. THE FEVER ARE TURNING CAITLIN CLARK INTO A ROLE PLAYER BECAUSE EVERYBODY SEEMS DETERMINED TO PROVE THIS ISN’T HER TEAM.
I’m calling what I SEE.
You have arguably the most dangerous playmaker in basketball STANDING IN THE CORNER while everybody else gets to audition for lead guard.
Clark finally hits TWO STRAIGHT SHOTS and starts cooking?
SUBBED OUT.
Indiana is within one possession when she leaves. She comes back minutes later and they’re DOWN NINE.
HOW MANY TIMES DOES THE SAME DAMN LESSON HAVE TO BE TAUGHT?!
And I’m going there: THIS IS STARTING TO LOOK LIKE AN INTERNAL POWER STRUGGLE ON THE COURT.
I can’t tell you what Boston, Mitchell or anybody else personally feels about Clark — none of us are in that locker room — but the basketball is giving off a TERRIBLE perception: everybody wants to prove their importance instead of accepting the obvious.
CAITLIN CLARK IS THE ENGINE.
That doesn’t diminish Boston.
That doesn’t diminish Mitchell.
It should make THEIR JOBS EASIER.
But instead of building around Clark’s gravity and playmaking, Indiana keeps finding new ways to minimize it.
THIS TEAM DOESN’T HAVE A TALENT PROBLEM.
🔥 IT HAS AN IDENTITY PROBLEM.
🔥 IT HAS A COACHING PROBLEM.
🔥 IT HAS AN ACCOUNTABILITY PROBLEM.
And until everybody accepts their role and starts playing complementary basketball instead of MY-TURN-YOUR-TURN basketball, the Fever are going to keep wasting one of the biggest advantages in the entire WNBA.
CALL A SPADE A SPADE. THIS IS A MESS.
Can someone tell my husband it's fine I interrupt him while he's working from home? Every time I walk in his office he acts like it's this huge distraction!? Like, hello, what do you think would be happening if you were in the office? Same shit, so smile and be happy to see me...
