Rough estimate for around 1776: well under 1% of white/European people (Europe ~150 million + colonial whites ~2 million).

Direct participants—investors (Britain alone ~13k over centuries), merchants, captains, and crews (a few hundred ships/year, crews of ~30)—were a tiny fraction of any population. Colonial slave buyers added more in the Americas but remained a small share of the total. Most Europeans were uninvolved peasants or workers.
