A landmark step toward national healing: @HakiKNCHR Chairperson Ms. Claris Ogangah today presented the Reparations Framework Report to H.E. President Dr. @WilliamsRuto

Highlighting the human impact of the work, Ms. Ogangah stated:

"The stories captured in the Reparations Framework Report remind us that behind every statistic is a human being, a family and a community whose suffering has often remained unseen and unacknowledged. By giving voice to these experiences, the Report contributes to a national process of healing founded on truth, recognition, and remembrance."

The Reparations Framework presented today proposes a range of measures to ensure justice, including compensation, rehabilitation, restitution, satisfaction and guarantees of non-repetition.
These are standard reparative justice measures used in transitional justice and human rights contexts to address harm suffered by victims of violations. The Framework seeks to establish a victim-centered, transparent and accountable system capable of delivering accessible and effective remedies in accordance with the Constitution and international human rights standards.

Speaking at this event, @OHCHRKENYA Country Representative @kwemoik, noted that respect for human rights is a core driver of business resilience and market competitiveness. OHCHR calls on companies in Kenya to embed the UNGPs into daily operations.

Today, GCNK & @OHCHRKENYA convened a workshop on Business & Human Rights, unpacking the UNGPs, Kenya’s NAP and what ESG and due diligence expectations mean for business.

Speaking at the GCNK and @UNHumanRights workshop, she noted Kenya’s leadership as the first African country with a National Action Plan on Business & Human Rights.

Today @HakiKNCHR launched the Public Inquiry report “Voices from the Land: Where Businesses and Investments Impact on Traditions, Culture and Human Rights” in Nakuru. The report documents how business operations are impacting the rights of Indigenous Peoples across 13 counties and sets out clear actions for State and non State actors. In her remarks, KNCHR Chairperson, Claris Ogangah pointed out that this report must not “sit on the shelf”, making it clear that the Commission will actively pursue its implementation. KNCHR will engage relevant institutions and business actors to secure concrete, time bound steps to protect and promote the rights of Indigenous communities across Kenya.

The Inquiry heard from communities including the Ogiek, Sengwer, Endorois, Ilchamus, Maasai, Turkana, Rendille, Boni, Aweer, Wailwana, Yaaku among others. The communities raised concerns about land loss, fenced off sacred sites, environmental degradation, labour abuses and increased SGBV around projects such as wind and geothermal plants, conservancies and ranches, large scale agriculture, ports and transport corridors.
