📢Breaking news: Ethiopia leading the charge for enhanced ownership of AU financing

In a move applauded as exmplary and a major boost for the push for increased financing of the AU, Ethiopia's Minister of Forein Affairs H.E. @GHessebon announced Ethiopia's decision to voluntarily join tier one of the AU member states that make the most assessed contributions dunding the @_AfricanUnion.

It looks like that this announcement prompted Kenya, which was considering the matter, to make the same announcement in an intervention on the first agenda of the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council that kicked off in Addis Ababa earlier today.

It is to be recalled that Angola announced its decision to remain in tier one during the AU summit in February 2026.

The addition these states expands the number of states in thr traditionally so-called big five tier one AU member states to eight. Other tier one member states are Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa.

Burundi, chair of the AU for 2026, also announced a decision for implementing the AU decision on collecting the 0.2% levy for funding of the AU.

As the first administration to establish and roll out, on its own volition, a framework to recognize and compensate victims of human rights violations, the Kenya Kwanza government has once again demonstrated its commitment to justice, accountability, national healing, unity and reconciliation.

This morning, I joined H.E. the Deputy President Prof. @KindikiKithure and fellow leaders in State House, Nairobi, during the presentation of the report on the Framework for Reparations for Victims of Human Rights Violations to H.E. President @WilliamsRuto by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights @HakiKNCHR

We commend KNCHR for the comprehensive report, and welcome recommendations to enact a reparation law and the operationalization of Article 37 of the Constitution to provide a clear legislative framework for demonstrations, picketing, and public assemblies.

As a Ministry, we commit ourselves to the full implementation of the report, including continuous training and retraining of our security officers on human rights, constitutionalism, and professional conduct.

We also call upon fellow citizens to observe the law as they exercise their rights to assembly, demonstrations and picketing.

The Reparations Framework presented today proposes a range of measures to ensure justice, including compensation, rehabilitation, restitution, satisfaction and guarantees of non-repetition.
These are standard reparative justice measures used in transitional justice and human rights contexts to address harm suffered by victims of violations. The Framework seeks to establish a victim-centered, transparent and accountable system capable of delivering accessible and effective remedies in accordance with the Constitution and international human rights standards.

Today, the Co-chairs of the Working Group of Human Rights Defenders (HRD), Defenders Coalition and the HRD Awards Jury are pleased to have presented the Human Rights Defenders of the Year Award to @LarryMadowo.
Larry was recognized by the Working Group of Human Rights Defenders HRD in March 2026 in recognition of his journalistic excellence and courage in advancing democracy, the rule of law, and justice for victims of state repression in Africa and beyond.
The #HRDAwardsAt10 was hosted by the European Union in Kenya @EUinKenya , which is the current Co-chair of the Working Group on HRDs.

The Annual HRD Awards were launched in 2016 by the Defenders Coalition and the HRD Working Group as a protective strategy for human rights defenders and a recognition of their work.

Kenya is honoured to host the United Nations Office at Nairobi, the only UN headquarters in the Global South, and welcomes its ongoing expansion.

This afternoon, I had the pleasure of meeting with the UN family in Nairobi, led by the new Resident Coordinator, Dr. Garry Conille.

Our discussions focused on deepening collaboration across several priority areas, including election preparedness, the fight against drugs and substance abuse, counter-terrorism and prevention of violent extremism, gender-based violence and capacity building.

I also apprised the team of the establishment of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, a critical initiative to address the demands of the city's growing population and strengthen its standing as a leading diplomatic and high-security hub.

Also present were United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Representative for Eastern Africa Ali Farouk Elbereir, UN Women Kenya Country Representative Antonia N'Gabala-Sodonon, and Country Director UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Charles Kwemoi.

Others were Head of the United Nations Office on Counter-Terrorism Sylvia Kabaki, Deputy Resident Representative United Nations Development Programme Madelena Monoja, United Nations Institute for Training and Research Senior Program Specialist Stefano Ghirardi, and UN Peace and Development Officer Prisca Kamungi.
