The Frenkie de Jong cycle has been going on for 7 years now.

He gets injured, everyone says “sell him”, questions his commitment, then he comes back, reminds everyone how good he is, and suddenly everyone wants him to stay.

Then it happens all over again.

I’ve genuinely never seen a player at Barça with a weirder relationship with the fanbase. After 7 years, I still can’t tell if he truly loves the club or if he’s just happy playing football and living in Barcelona.

@FCB_Xabhi He’s always been capable of this. His peak wasn’t even the World Cup, it was the Euros when he finished as top scorer.

The problem has never been his level. It’s his body. Every time he finds form and builds momentum, another injury hits and he has to start all over again.

Signing Gordon before the World Cup was one of the smartest things Deco did. He acted early and got him for a great price.

But that’s exactly why I’m frustrated now. When you start making smart moves, I expect them to continue not suddenly hear that the defence is fine and we might not even sign a striker. Don’t stop halfway.

@NealGardner_ @nyame_ketewa At this point it’s not even surprising. Everything around Frenkie has always been weird and unclear the injuries, the contract situations, his future, even his commitment to Barça. Seven years later and there’s still always some mystery around him.

Kroupi is 20 and I really like his talent, but he should be a developmental signing—not Barça’s marquee starting striker.

You sign players like him to compete, develop and eventually take over. You don’t spend around €100m on potential when you need guarantees now.

Barça must build for the future, but we also need to win today.

This board keeps delaying obvious problems until every option becomes bad.

Ferran should’ve been renewed two years ago. Álvarez cannot be the only striker plan. And there’s no way Flick genuinely looked at this defence and midfield depth and said it was enough.

This isn’t planning. It’s reacting too late.

There’s no right decision with Ferran anymore. Selling him for a discount is bad, losing him for free is bad. The real mistake was allowing his contract to reach its final year when everyone knew this situation was coming. This should’ve been handled two years ago, but the board just kept postponing it.

And honestly, having Álvarez as the only obvious striker option scares me. I know Deco likes to work secretly and suddenly complete deals nobody expects, so people assume the striker signing will be the same. I hope they’re right, but I really don’t trust that it’s guaranteed this time.

The reports that Flick is satisfied with the CB situation make no sense either. Was he basically told he can have a striker or a defender, but not both? Because no serious manager can look at this squad depth, watch other top clubs strengthen everywhere, and genuinely believe our defence and midfield are good enough.

Just get him on loan. This is exactly the kind of opportunity Barça should be taking. He was flying before being played out of position. Technically he’s outstanding, great on the ball, and while his aerial game needs work despite his height, that’s coachable. Give him service from Lamine and Gordon and I genuinely think he’d surprise a lot of people.

Barça started this window like a serious European giant, targeting names like Adeyemi and Gordon. Since then, it feels like we’ve gone back to accepting mediocrity. If Flick is genuinely satisfied with this defence, I honestly don’t know how anyone can look at what Madrid are building and think this is enough.
