The US Supreme Court Tuesday approved a historic settlement, ending 13 years of litigation over Rio Grande water rights below Elephant Butte Reservoir. The settlement resolves Texas v. New Mexico & Colorado, a case centered on claims that New Mexico had been overusing groundwater
New Mexico will continue work already underway in the Lower Rio Grande: improving water management, supporting conservation, strengthening data and monitoring, and planning for long-term aquifer sustainability in partnership with local water users and communities.
