A Quarter Century on: Remembering the Serb civilian victims from Orahovac and the neighbouring villages - #Kosovo
In the heart of Velika Hoča, Kosovo, a grim milestone marks today: 25 years since the devastating losses suffered by Serbs in the municipality of Orahovac.
A memorial service was served by the local parish priest Fr. Milan Stojković and two more priests, alongside a monument dedicated to the kidnapped and murdered victims. Families, relatives, and neighbors of the victims laid wreaths and flowers.
Twenty-five years ago today Kosovo Albanian paramilitaries of KLA executed a mass kidnapping and murder of Serbs in the Orahovac municipality. From July 17 to 22, 1998, more than 100 individuals were abducted and transported to prisons and camps run by the KLA.
In the initial onslaught, seven people were murdered. By the end of July 1998, this region had lost 47 of its Serb inhabitants. The brutalities of kidnappings, murders, and arson attacks on Serb homes did not end there but continued, leading to the total expulsion of the Serb population from the villages of Retimlje, Opteruša, and Zočište during 1998 and 1999. Velika Hoča is the only village in the Municipality with Serb population still remaining as well as a tiny ghetto-like Serbian quarter around the Orahovac church.
A haunting case was that of the Kostić family from Retimlje village: in a single day, 14 male family members were abducted. On the same day, six monks were abducted by KLA from the 14th-century monastery of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Zočište. They were released on July 22, after interventions by the OSCE and International Red Cross, along with two other women, two sick men from the villages of Retimlje and Opteruša, and older individuals from Zočište.
Despite the passage of years, many Serb residents in this area remain listed as missing.
DNA analysis conducted by the internationally led forensic experts identified 36 Serbs in the mass graves of Mališevo and Volujak, who were kidnapped by the KLA in the Orahovac region in July 1998. Several remains of victims kidnapped from 1999 to 2000 were also found in individual graves and were reburied according to the families' wishes.

Presents are grim picture of vandalism is almost all gravestones have been overturned or smashed into pieces, another sad picture of ethnic intolerance and discrimination which continues for years with impunity.
The Association of Families of Kidnapped and Missing Serbs from Kosovo and Metohija presented details of the kidnappings and murders to all relevant institutions collecting data on kidnapped, missing, and murdered persons. However, to this day, no one has been held accountable for the crimes committed in the Orahovac municipality.
The #Serbian #Orthodox #Church has frequently condemned all acts of violence against civilians, irrespective of their ethnicity in Kosovo. In the armed conflict of 1999 also many Kosovo Albanians fell victim. A significant number of them remain missing to this day, their bodies yet to be recovered. While prominent members of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia's regime and police have been convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), no members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) have ever been held accountable for crimes against Kosovo Serbs, Roma and dissenting Kosovo Albanians, during and after the armed conflict.
The Specialist Chambers Court in The Hague, which is currently primarily focusing on KLA crimes still has yet to deliver justice, despite a delay of two decades.
The absence of justice for all victims equally, along with the tragic memories, continues to weigh heavily on those left behind. The hope is that acknowledgment and remembrance will eventually lead to healing and justice.

In the meantime, relations between the Serbian population and KFOR in Northern #Kosovo have become quite friendly. According to the Kossev info portal, organized sports competitions between US KFOR and local Serbs have even taken place in front of the Municipal building which still remains occupied by heavily armed Kosovo police who refuse to vacate the building . Just in front of the barbed wire that KFOR installed last week, they played football, volleyball, and held chess and darts competitions yesterday.
Today, members of the American KFOR joined them in these games.
Several members of this mission competed in a tug-of-war with some locals from Leposavić today.

Pozive na mir i suživot ne razumeju svi i mi moramo skretati pažnju na silu i nepravdu koja se događa, jer doći će vreme mira kada ćemo se trebati pogledati u oči. Tamo gde smo oduvek bili tu i ostajemo. #Srbija#templar
Based on media reports and documentation from the #Serbian#Orthodox#Church Diocese in #Kosovo, dozens of incidents, many presumably ethnically motivated, occurred in Kosovo between 2021 and 2023. A significant portion of these incidents remain uninvestigated, despite being reported to Kosovo police. In some cases, K/Serbs hesitate to report incidents due to fears of intimidation and potential retaliation.
The surge in incidents signifies a dramatic deterioration of ethnic relations in Kosovo, even though the armed conflict concluded 24 years ago. Over 150,000 Kosovo Serbs who resided in Kosovo prior to the 1999 conflict are still unable to return to their homes, and numerous Serbian Orthodox churches destroyed after the Kosovo war still remain in ruins.
These grim circumstances do not portray an idyllic democratic society, as presented by Kosovo politicians, as the human and religious rights of non-majority populations are still jeopardised.
Glossing over reality does not contribute to progress. Instead, what is needed is responsible governance that respects the rights, traditions, and identities of all ethnic and religious communities especially the southern community, which has been requesting collective protection of its rights, and its heritage throughout Kosovo.
The Serbian Orthodox Church has recently provided a detailed briefing to the diplomatic community, explaining its challenges and outlining its perspectives on the protection of its communities and sites in Kosovo.
According to the position of the Church which remains involved in interreligious dialogue with other communities in Kosovo, promotion of nationalism is unacceptable and only instigates further conflicts, posing a threat, not only to the region, but to Europe, which is already grappling with more serious issues at the moment. It’ the high time for responsible work and not for toxic and antagonising political rhetoric and promotion of ethnic clean societies or territories.
#Srbija
