If you are interested in oral microbiomes, come check out @OU_LMAMR PhD student @sarahjane0060's poster today at #SMBE2024!
Poster # 49: The influence of subsistence strategies on oral microbiome composition and function in ancient populations.
Wrapping up a great visit by @the_carter_show! So happy he can join us before heading off to his faculty position at @NCState. Tapping into some metagenomes with @tanvihonap @sarahjane0060 at @OU_LMAMR!
Erica Palmer, Marie Capps and Brian Kemp, researchers from @OU_LMAMR, contributed to a study of Alaska archaeological sites 7,000 years old and older. This study found that ancient Alaskans were freshwater fishers. 🎣 https://t.co/ceKI2z77Jv
Congratulations to @OU_LMAMR's newly minted Dr. Kristen Rayfield on an excellent Ph.D. defense! 🥳Her dissertation is titled "Anthropogenic Impacts: Bringing Multi-Omic Approaches to Niche Construction Theory".
Congratulations to @OU_LMAMR and @CourtneyHofman Group undergraduate student, Kaylee Tatum, on winning the Phi Beta Kappa Undergraduate Research Day Grand Prize! 👏
Congratulations to @OU_LMAMR and Sankaranarayanan Group undergraduates, Ahmed Hussan and Saadia Nazir, on their Honorable Mentions for their presentations! They presented their UROP-funded projects at OU Undergraduate Research Day.
Our open-access paper on ancient oral metagenomes from pre-contact era Wichita Ancestors is out in AJBA!

Congratulations @tanvihonap, @CecilMLewisJr, @monroecara14, @sarahjane0060, Marc Levine, Krithi Sankaranarayanan, and all co-authors!
In this paper, we present one of the largest oral metagenome datasets from a pre-contact era Native American population. We also demonstrate the presence of distinct lineages of oral microbes specific to the pre-contact Americas.
@OU_AGSA and @OU_LMAMR Undergraduate Kaylee Tatum presented her @NSF "Navigating the New Arctic" and OU UReCa funded research at Research Day at the Capitol @OklahomaEPSCoR
Wrapped up this year's in-person aspect of our immersion experiences in ancient metagenomics. We loved it! Now looking forward to the virtual training. Thanks @NSF and thank you @sankofadna @GracielaCabana @JenniferRaff @kgbeaty, Lateefa Abul, and Katie McCormack for joining us!
New perspective piece entitled, "Ancient pathogens provide a window into health and well-being" thanks to a great team effort with @StoneLab_ASU, @SharonDeWitte and Mercy Akinyi!
