On this day in 2011, my last mission, STS-134, launched, carrying the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer and spare parts for the ISS to enable its survival well past the end of the Shuttle program.

Wheels Stop. #OTD 10 years ago, Space Shuttle Endeavour completed her last space mission, landing at @NASAKennedy . We, the crew of STS-134, the flight control teams, the engineers and support teams @NASA were honored to share this incredible mission.

STS-134 was supposed to be the last mission of the Shuttle program, however, OV-104 Atlantis was approved to fly one last time for STS-135.

Atlantis stood by during the STS-134 launch in preparation for a possible rescue mission, "STS-335", in case of an anomaly.

@Ov101Enterprise @nark_of @pilliarscreatio @ShuttleAlmanac This. VAFB was originally intended to be used as a launch and landing site. Edwards is too far off the launch corridor to be usable for an RTLS abort and would have required overflight of populated areas. However, it may have been usable for an abort-once-around scenario.

On this day in 2008, I lifted off on STS-123, carrying a Canadian robotic arm and Japanese module for the ISS.

On this day in 2003, Columbia launched on what would be its last flight, STS-107, carrying seven astronauts, including the first Israeli.

May the 10 astronauts who lost their lives on Jan. 27, 1967, and Jan. 28, 1986, rest in peace.

On this day in 1986, Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off on STS-51L, the 25th shuttle mission.

At T+ 73 seconds, following a joint failure on a solid rocket booster, the Shuttle stack was torn apart and Challenger broke up due to aerodynamic forces.

There were no survivors.

Today, 35 years after Challenger and 54 since Apollo 1, it is extremely important to remember the lessons learned. These ten astronauts died due to entirely foreseen circumstances that were ignored by management. Never forget, and never allow it to happen again.
