We're back with another writeup for the latest RollCall Breakout Room ☎️

Now that Dencun is live on Goerli, and with Sepolia and Holesky just around the corner, rollup teams gathered to discuss the progress being made by each team in adding support for EIP-4844 data blobs.

For those who are unaware, EIP-4844, also known as proto-danksharding, is an upgrade that will be implemented during Ethereum's next major protocol upgrade (Dencun).

EIP-4844 is an integral part of Ethereum's rollup-centric roadmap, which is expected to benefit rollups by significantly reducing the cost required to store data on the Ethereum blockchain.

Once Dencun is running on Goerli, Sepolia, and Holeski, the core devs from the @ethereum Foundation will monitor all testnets until blobs start expiring on Goerli.

The expiry window is approximately 18 days - if all tests are successful, mainnnet deployment will soon follow.

As of now, the EF DevOps team is battle testing EIP-4844 by spamming Goerli with artificial data blobs for testing.

The EF is eager to monitor more organic testing by various rollup teams once they are ready to start rolling out their 4844 integrations.

Moving on, the goal of last weeks RollCall breakout room call was to gauge the "readiness" of various rollup teams in implementing their 4844 integrations.

In addition, teams also discussed some shared design issues and provided feedback to Ethereum L1 protocol developers.

As it stands today, virtually all rollup teams are actively working to integrate support for 4844 data blobs.

Optimistic rollups are currently farthest ahead, and are gearing up for public testnet deployments.

On the ZK side, it will take slightly longer because of some additional complexities, such as adding ZK circuit support which requires additional effort than that of an optimistic rollup.

Next, the conversation steered towards some of the issues that rollup teams are currently facing.

Most importantly, many teams highlighted that there is currently a lack of robust tooling for data blobs.

As an example, up until last week, Solidity did not support the Blobhash opcode, which instead required workarounds that introduce some additional and unnecessary complexities to the rollup contracts.

Furthermore, teams expressed running into some API difficulties, such as the latest Geth release, which does not support the blob versioned hash field in the estimate gas API.

However, these issues will most likely be resolved quickly following feedback from multiple teams.

Next, there were some concerns around 4844 throughput in the event that rollups begin to commit blobs non-stop.

Is it possible that 4844 throughput could become saturated, and in doing so, making blobs even more expensive than calldata?

Over the long-term, these issues will be resolved by full Danksharding, however, over the short-term, rollup teams will continue to support both blobs and calldata, with the batch committer using whichever option is the most cost-efficient.

Our final topic for this months call focused on the storage of rollup historical data.

Today, rollup nodes could retrieve all historical batch data from Ethereum's transaction payload (calldata), however, data blobs still expire after approximately 18 days.

Because of this, it is up to rollup teams to ensure that there are viable services that guarantee the long-term availability of rollup historical data.

It is possible that centralized providers may emerge to fill this need, however, this would not introduce additional trust assumptions, as blobs can still be verified by using their onchain hash.

Dencun, and EIP-4844 are very exciting developments in Ethereum's protocol development.

Whilst there is still a need for additional support and tooling, rollup users will be able to start enjoying some much needed reduced transaction costs.
