In #Oxnard, near Port Hueneme and the military base, someone bombed my neighborhood. I believe it to be the negligence of 3 old friends who caused this to happen, as well as KFSN-TV in Fresno. Some of their employees as well as Sheriff M have said bomb threats in the past. #News

Digital surveillance evolved from traditional state monitoring practices to sophisticated AI-powered systems capable of managing terabytes of info in real time. Surveillance mechanisms that were primarily manual or had limited tech were also greatly supplemented by the available Machine Learning & Computer Vision (CV) tech. A recent study even showed that AI technologies, especially CV, became integral to contemporary surveillance systems in order to facilitate automated identification & tracking, as well as prediction of behaviors (Kalluri et al., 2025). This technological transition constituted a paradigmatic change in the way surveillance was performed in those societies.

The spread & growth of digital platforms, smart tech, etc., help promote surveillance acts in daily life as normal transaction systems. People engaged w/ AI systems via social media, mobile apps, & smart things in their lives, often being unaware of how much data was collected & processed (Shrestha et al., 2025). This underscored the growing tension between technological convenience & privacy protection.

The report concluded that AI-powered surveillance systems had a major impact on privacy rights, freedom of expression, & human rights accountability in digital spaces. The results showed how growing dependence on algorithmic surveillance, predictive analytics, & automated data processing limited individuals’ control over personal info & eroded privacy protection. The study concluded that surveillance technologies notably chilled freedom of expression, & the general tendency for individuals to limit their online communication because of perceived monitoring risks. The study confirmed that transparency & accountability by AI systems were still falling short, complicating governance to uphold human rights. The research found that AI surveillance systems led to added efficiency & security in digital systems but also presented grave threats to fundamental human rights & democratic values.

CV research powers surveillance tech

Thru an analysis of computer-vision (CV) research papers & citing patents, we found that most of these docs enable the targeting of human bodies & body parts. Comparing the 1990s to the 2010s, we observed a 5x increase in the number of these computer-vision papers linked to downstream surveillance-enabling patents.

Our findings challenge the notion that only a few rogue entities enable surveillance. Rather, we found that THE NORMALIZATION OF TARGETING HUMANS PERMEATES THE FIELD. This normalization is especially striking given patterns of obfuscation. We reveal obfuscating language that allows documents to avoid direct mention of targeting humans, for example, by normalizing the REFERRING TO OF HUMANS AS ‘OBJECTS’ to be studied w/out special consideration.

TECHNOLOGIES THAT ENABLE THE MONITORING OF HUMAN DATA, which may be perceived as differentially malevolent or benevolent by different communities, nonetheless have historically established consequences: these technologies ENGENDER FEAR & SELF-CENSORSHIP; it is lucrative & standard practice for ENTITIES IN POSITIONS OF RELATIVE POWER to USE THESE TECHNOLOGIES TO ACCESS, MONETIZE, COERCE, CONTROL, OR POLICE INDIVIDUALS OR COMMUNITIES W/ LESSER POWER; & these technologies are frequently deputized by state surveillance organizations.

Crucially, in addition to individualized consequences, the rapid generation & proliferation of technologies monitoring humans accumulates to what Zuboff calls the condition of ‘no exit’, where there are fewer & fewer spaces left to opt out, ‘disconnect’ & seek respite.
