@AndrewHammel1 I mean if this happens in all of France, 240 arrests seems mild (it's a country of 60M, I assume these things happen every weekend). Sure, less would be good, but not sure whether this is much higher than a random weekend in France or in other countries.
@danbarker Wait, the thief kept the egg (was not recovered) and only got two years!
A good 500K pa salary for going to jail! (assuming he loses 50% selling on the black market)
@patrickc@_brianpotter I strongly agree that we should build beautifully again (both in planning and architecture).
But how certain are you that this would actually make it easier to build?
Are there e.g. studies that there is less local opposition for new classical vs modernist buildings today?
@bswud Sorry for all the German language sources (it's mostly a local topic, so most of the attention is from local sources).
But in the age of good-enough LLMs, the language shouldn't be a big hurdle anyways :)
@bswud Re housing, in Basel-City an initiative to cap rents passed by popular vote and seems to have absolutely demolished housing production:

(though it's in force since 2022, but housing production only cratered in 2024 ... not sure what's up with that)
@bswud I am not sure whether the initiatives in Zürich will pass. But the fact that so many are coming at once (and they are strongly supported by parties which together get around 60% of the vote in Zürich) tells me that at least some will pass with ease.
@mattyglesias I remember that the German Feuilletons were filled with outrage that they were building a "kitschy Disneyland version of the past" at the time. I felt the same (I was young and easily swayed).
Years later I visited and it's just extremely beautiful and full of people enjoying it
@Tim_Roehn I mean it implicity DOES say that most of the report is true, since all denials are overly specific.
Still bizarre that this (somewhat hilarious if very deranged) case is getting a thousand articles worth of coverage per day.
@CaleMcNulty@LeahLibresco Might just take a long time to bear fruit.
But we should plant those trees so our grandchildren can play in their shade (without getting Lyme disease).
@oxpal@moultano I don't think Green energy (without intermittency problems) is currently cheaper than nuclear could be (at e.g. South Korea build speed and cost).
Once storage or hydrogen / e-fuels get cheap enough, it might. But it's a risky bet to make IMHO!
@oxpal@moultano Not having a permanent place to store the waste is:
a) probably fine (temporary storage is relatively cheap)
b) a purely political choice. Switzerland chose a place. If there was political will, so would Germany. Barring that, pay Switzerland to take it.
