At a time when there's little cheer to be found when reading the papers, I was delighted to see @ruthdavis27 in the Guardian and read that the Govt has appointed her to be the UK’s first envoy for nature. Smart move. #ClimateEmergency#biodiversity#30x30

The disruption of carbon sequestration processes across key ecosystems is truly terrifying. Forget growth, we need to eliminate carbon emissions & secure ecosystem protection at scale by implementing #30x30. @UKLabour wake up!

Shocked to read how researchers have found significant amounts of more than 10 kinds of antibiotics and laxatives in corals located down to 40m at the head of the Gulf of Aquaba in the Red Sea. #antibiotics#marinepollution#coral#coralreef

At last! Chagossians can now return to the #Chagos island if they so wish. What isn't mentioned by @BBCNews is the Chagos #MPA: I trust the big environmental NGOs will do everything in their powers to aid the rightful custodians in protecting Chagos' marine life. #30x30
UK agrees to give up sovereignty of remote Chagos Islands to Mauritius, in historic deal over one of its last overseas territories https://t.co/RpGm3JcQ6w
Protect What’s Beneath the Surface: The Isle of Rum's Disappearing Ecosystems
Our most recent investigations have revealed further damage, exposing the urgent need for real protection before it's too late.
The waters around the Isle of Rum lie within the Small Isles Marine Protected Area (MPA), home to rare and vital marine life, from carbon-storing muds to the largest known bed of fan mussels in Scotland. But despite its "protected" status, bottom-trawling and scallop dredging continue to destroy these delicate habitats.
Promises have been made by @scotgov to safeguard these waters for nearly a decade—but action is yet to follow. Our seas and future depend on it.
Visit https://t.co/ZvNVlhQ9u6 to learn how you can help protect these vital ecosystems.

Good to see how the #Greenpeace report I worked on which shows how #Arctic biodiversity is under threat from Norway's #DeepSeaMining plans is now out:

Robust piece by stalwart cetacean campaigner @dallsporpoise (@EIA_News) in response to provocative opinion piece by Peter Bridgewater, previous chair of @iwc_int, arguing the org is now redundant. Far from it, #whales & #dolphins need every bit of help!

Got to love this theory as to why yachts have been going through Straits of Gibraltar have been targeted by Iberian #orca, with young #killerwhales attacking the sailing boats' rudders. Is it that they are practicing their #tuna hunting techniques?

If you missed this morning’s episode of #TheLifeScientific you can listen to the podcast here on BBC Sounds. My guest is Darren Croft who studies one of the ocean’s most charismatic and spectacular animals – the killer whale.

Depressing but unfortunately, not surprising, a new study estimates that among over-fished stocks, the number of collapsed stocks was likely 85% larger than currently recognised. #fisheries#stopoverfishing#sustainability@gedgar33

Join @MaldivesCoral & other Maldivian NGOs in stopping the Maldivian Government in granting #longlinefishing licenses that will have devastating impacts on #sharks & other marine life, undermines the sustainable pole and line fishery & will put off tourists.
Longlining captures sharks, manta rays, birds, and other marine life with devastating consequences for ocean health & biodiversity.
‼️Urge Maldivian government not to grant longline fishing licenses.

Knock me down with a (sea) feather (crinoid)! New research shows polymetallic nodules carry a similar charge to an AA battery & produce 'dark oxygen'. If you need one more reason as to why there should be no #DeepSeaMining, look no further! #defendthedeep
