The most-disliked trailer of Christopher Nolan’s career comes in response to casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.

Let me explain why the disapproval is the rational part of this story, and why the confidence of the people waving it away is not.

The defence for casting Nyong’o as Helen of Troy is shallow. “These are made-up stories,” says the online commenter. “They can be remade however we want.”

The people making this argument believe that distinguishing myth from history is a display of intelligence.

A clean example of the Dunning-Kruger effect, the confidence of someone who has learned that a thing is invented without ever asking what the invention is for.

History records one man, once. Myth records what a thousand men held in common.

The myth is the self-portrait a civilization paints of its own best self.

This is why it is not merely a tale for entertainment.

Homer’s Odyssey is a time capsule for a culture, the encoded values and examples that tell a people what it means to belong to them.

There is a form of child abuse called Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where a mother secretly makes her own child sick so she can play the devoted caretaker at the bedside and collect the sympathy of everyone watching.

The town sees a saint but the reality is manufactured illness.

We have scaled this pathology to a civilization.

The will to care is one of the most powerful drives in women, and properly channeled it is necessary and virtuous.

But as our institutions filled with that instinct, it was redirected from individual children to society at large.

I call the result the Daycare Governance Model, and it has three roles only: infants to be protected, caregivers to administer the protection, and predators to be removed.

The caretaker class is rewarded with prestige, funding, and moral authority, all of which grow in proportion to the number of victims under their care.

Their incentive is the poisoning mother's incentive.

A caretaker rewarded for the number of sick under their watch will, in the end, produce the sick.

So we lowered the threshold for suffering until everyone qualified, and we began diagnosing the strong as toxic.

True care makes itself unnecessary.

But a patient cured is a customer lost.

That is the whole difference between a good mother and the poisoning one, and we have lost the ability to tell them apart.

Which is exactly why it is so hard to name, and so easy to applaud.
