I saw a post on Reddit that said, “When you walk through a museum, you’re not just looking at art. You’re moving through centuries of people trying to explain love, grief, power, beauty, and belonging.” I don’t think I’ve ever seen a museum described so beautifully.

I think there are two types of optimism:

1. Passive Optimism
2. Active Optimism

Passive Optimism is exclusively about belief. The belief that things will work out. Blind faith.

Active Optimism is about belief that begets action. The belief that things will work out, and the action to make sure they do. Earned faith.

Passive Optimism fails for the same reason Pessimism does. Because it doesn’t move. The passive optimist does nothing because he thinks he doesn’t have to.

And the reality is that Passive Optimism can often masquerade as patience, faith, or even wisdom. It’s the career path that will sort itself out. It’s the relationship struggle that will surely disappear with time. It’s the health issue that will eventually go away.

Belief is great. Faith is great. But without appropriate action, they are a recipe for long-term disappointment.

A mentor once told me this:

Always assume things will work out, then do the work to make it true.

That combination creates a quiet confidence that allows you to tolerate uncertainty better than anything else.

It’s a mindset of Active Optimism. Belief and action.

“Parang nagagalit po na hindi ko po maintindihan ang sarili ko po. Naawa din po ako sa lugar. Bakit ginanito po nila?” Erlinda Capistrano, one of the residents in the area, said in the documentary.

Loss of life (young life at that) brought about by avoidable circumstances that the victims were exposed to by authority figures that were supposed to care and nurture them - is a tragedy that requires accountability. No it won’t bring back Divine and Rene, but we cannot allow people in power to be protected when their authority and status were wielded to put young men in precarious situations that took their lives. There’s anecdotes on record of precedent, there’s a grieving mother asking for the most basic details amid official statements saying they are ‘working closely’ with the families.

Investigate this to the fullest. Basketball is by no means more important than protecting our young people, most especially those who come from backgrounds that force them and their families to look at a roster spot, game minutes, a coaching staff’s favor and approval - as tickets to a better life.

Pay close attention to who says what, if anything at all. If you’re not enraged by the avoidable accident that took the lives of two young men, if your instinct is to protect an institution’s reputation over condemning those responosible for two boys dying, if you would rather be silent because you’re worried about relationships or your place in the industry, then you’re part of the problem.

This was avoidable. This was negligent. It’s only basketball, ffs. There are people responsible. Hold them accountable.
