@Somethingvauge_@ByEddieFerns@RO5A7INA Yes it’s more complex than good vs evil + ordinary people are not the state. But Britain’s (+ France, Belgium etc’s) outsized wealth/influence endures and is a consequence of their exploitation of others so don’t think it’s been long enough yet to say “everyone both good and bad”
@Somethingvauge_@ByEddieFerns@RO5A7INA History does have ‘sides’ though, there are immoral policies (invasion, enslavement) that some states violated to great and enduring wealth and power and others did not. Also true Irish individuals violated morality too - e.g. elite catholic merchants in cork supplied slave trade
@Somethingvauge_@ByEddieFerns@RO5A7INA Not the same, the Protestant ascendancy remained a distinct cultural and political group who identified as and remained part of the English aristocracy - removed from Irish society and culture - throughout the generations, they sent children to be educated in England etc.
@Somethingvauge_@ByEddieFerns@RO5A7INA Wellington is quite literally an example of the British aristocracy who colonised Ireland. He was the son of an Earl, went to Eton, the descendent of soldiers who fought under Tudor monarchy to invade Ireland and were given Irish land as a reward.
@FlairTwenty@ByEddieFerns@Somethingvauge_@RO5A7INA Do you think Wellington was Irish? He was member of occupying English elite - family granted Irish land by Elizabeth 1st as a reward for suppressing Irish rebellion. Went to eton, then politics fighting to keep ‘native’ Irish Catholics out of power + protect British landowners.
@owenjonesjourno To state the obvious, she’s pretending to plan to do this for notoriety, which is v lucrative for her. She knows the reason LBC invite her on, the reason you retweet it and the reason we’re all talking about it is that she succeeds in shocking a cynical online culture.
@markbayly@Ianvincentscott@EnochBurke His offence was harassment of a colleague and trespassing, not pronouns. He keeps being re-arrested because he insists on using a school where children should be safe and anonymous as a way to court media attention for his political and religious views.
@Gmanfan47@winding_sios@AnnaKelly47@kieghannangle@AllisonSchuste@PressSec@potua Micheál Martin is the Taoiseach, his equivalent would be a prime minister. He's the leader of the government. The president is a ceremonial role in Ireland and has no power. Odd you admit to knowing nothing about Irish government but feel it's your place to assess our leadership
@WallStreetApes That is because it isn't real. It's rage-bait propaganda that relies on the instinct that people won't bother to look up what the organisation actually does.
@PlotPit @elonmusk It's unbelievable because it's not true. Look at the organisation yourself and decide if this is a fair and accurate representation of their work (then ask why someone would want us to think that it is)
@RSM18623525@ReversVinc82189@elonmusk But it's not true and it is manipulated. The statement "exists to teach afghanis about degenerate modern art" is a lie. They work in many countries, in Afghanistan they provide humanitarian support in education, health AND training afghans to generate income from craftsmanship.
@h__u__e__y @ScottsSister@PatriotXV11@elonmusk Indenture is not enslavement. Their children were born free, they remained people not chattel in the eyes of the law.
@jones__bart@ScottsSister@PatriotXV11@elonmusk They were not. Indenture was cruel and exploitative but it was not equivalent to hereditary chattel enslavement. The 'Irish slave' myth is an online trope that has been discredited by Irish historians and every Irish university.
@Kev_OC66@AlexTheGuiri@BallaTheSenior@lewis_goodall From January, the schools will have to charge parents VAT on fees, whatever those fees are. To avoid raising the bill for parents, schools who don't want to "pass it on" have to lower their fees proportionately. For those schools, parents will now pay 20% VAT on a lower fee.
