I've just returned from Nigeria, a country I’ve criss-crossed for decades in the fight against polio and now malaria. It was a pleasure to join the “Science of Defeating Malaria” leadership course in Abuja and hear directly from Coordinating Minister @muhammadpate

I am in #Uganda, where the government has mounted a prompt and capable response to the outbreak of #Ebola.
Screening at the borders helped detect cases arriving from neighbouring #DRC, and the country’s surveillance, testing and case management systems are doing steady work. Of the 19 confirmed cases so far, 14 were among people who entered from DRC and five are Ugandan nationals. Sadly, two people from DRC have died, and our thoughts are with their families.
@WHO is supporting Uganda, alongside @AfricaCDC and partners across the region, as the country leads this response.
With continued collaboration, I am confident this outbreak can be brought under control.
#Outbreaks begin & end with the community. They’re the success of any surveillance system - they’re not just consumers of “expert instructions”.
Engaging the community is never rushed. Every respectful “hello” is weaved into the strength of the fabric of trust. #UntilWeAreAllSafe

On my way to #DRC.
Ebola is back. Ituri province is bearing the brunt. I will be on the ground with our @WHO teams, partners, and the extraordinary health workers who have never stopped fighting, all working under the leadership of the Government of DRC.
16 times, this country has defeated Ebola. The 17th will be no different. But we must act now, together.
Who actually gets in?
This week Washington quietly expanded its refugee program for white South Africans while tightening travel restrictions from Ebola-affected countries in Central and East Africa. At the same time, the African Development Bank’s annual meetings in Brazzaville sent a sharp message to donors in an increasingly fragmented world, and the final countdown on AGOA continues.
These moves aren’t random. They reveal a narrowing, more selective vision for America’s relationship with Africa.

South African Mint just dropped something special: The African Range — its first high-relief coin collection, sculpted from original works by acclaimed artist Dylan Lewis.
Debut series captures the cheetah’s hunt in stunning detail across five coins.
The standout? A 1 oz gold coin paired with a miniature Lewis bronze statue.

An important step, @UgandaMediaCent towards a community centered approach and community health literacy (CHL).
CHL is key in epidemics, and the media is a powerful frontline ally. As. It is a core, actionable strategy. Key tenets of @WAIPH_News definition of CHL include:
i. Grassroots Empowerment
Equipping local populations—especially in rural or marginalized areas, with the knowledge to navigate healthcare services and make informed health decisions.
ii. Combating Misinformation
Using strategic communication and awareness-raising to dispel dangerous myths, which is critical during epidemic responses and disease outbreaks.
iii. Community Trust
Leveraging trusted voices (such as community leaders, Civil Society Organisations, and the media) to "simplify the science" of public health so it is culturally relevant and actionable for everyone.
iv. A "Whole-of-Society" Approach
Integrating community health literacy into national health security systems to build long-term population resilience against chronic illnesses and infectious diseases.
