🌱 Soil is much more than just dirt beneath our feet.
It is a living and breathing ecosystem that supports agriculture, biodiversity, water cycles and even our climate.
📹 Watch to learn why accurate soil and data information matters. 👇

In October, through intensive fieldwork in the Gorce Mts., we launched a joint project between @JagiellonskiUni and @KU_Leuven, funded by the #CELSA Research Fund. The project investigates soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and their stability in the context of forest succession
New in Geoderma Regional: “Dynamic linkages between human pressure and stability of soil organic matter in mid-latitude mountains – A perspective review” by Łukasz Musielok and coworkers.

Finally, we propose a framework linking human pressure to SOM stability, analyzing factors like tree species conversion, windthrows, LULCC, fires, and soil erosion. We emphasize the need for a holistic approach to studying SOM stability, considering soil-forming processes.
We review the literature on SOM stability in various
related environmental contexts, including soil types typical of different altitudinal zones as well as specific
intrazonal soils such as organic soils of mountain peatlands and soils developed on calcareous parent materials.
We propose a conceptual hierarchical framework for the spatio-temporal variability of SOM preservation due to: (1) unfavorable climatic conditions, (2) chemical composition of litter, and (3) SOM seclusion
We focused on mid-latitude mountains because they cover around 30% of Earth's surface, and due to relatively high NPP, the soils in these areas can accumulate significant amounts of organic matter
Today on the Conference of Parties (COP7) meeting, Mr Harald Egerer, head of the UN Environment Programme Vienna and Carpathian Convention Secretary highlighted the importance of the cooperation between @S4C_Carpathians and @UNEP_Europe . We are happy to support good decisions!
The 7th Forum Carpaticum is taking place in Krakow🇵🇱
It brings together scientists to share recent research and discuss the challenges and possible modes of adaptation to ongoing environmental, economic and socio-political crises in the Carpathian region.
