Exploring the Jaujac lava flow in Ardèche, France! 🌋
Formed 12–45k years ago by a Strombolian volcano, the Lignon River carved through the basalt, revealing spectacular cooling columns and entablature.

A recent revisit to this fossil soil or “paleosol”.
The paleosol is the dark brown colour…a preserved soil.
The bright yellow colour above the paleosol is so unusual. I’ve not seen this elsewhere. I wonder if the sulphate-rich sea spray is part of the chemistry?
Having a dark horizon is not enough to make it a mollic epipedon.
At 0–32 cm, this soil has a moist color of 10YR 2/1, 6.4% organic C, 65.5% base saturation, and fine subangular blocky structure; therefore it is a mollic epipedon.
@ColombianSoils This stony layer looks like a buried A horizon and the Mollic appears to be developing in the fine materials accumulated over the years (solimovic material)
A high-mountain soil from Colombia 🇨🇴
A Typic Melanocryand developed from volcanic ash over glacial deposits, at 3,960 m a.s.l. in Bugalagrande, Valle del Cauca.
It has a melanic epipedon, with a melanic index of 1.6, Munsell color 10YR 2/1, and 12.5% organic carbon.
Beautiful examples of shallow Lithomorphic soils.
Rocks are characteristic of weathered Ice Age materials.
The B horizon is absent. Rocks are a weathered C horizon with minimal soil formation. @Subsolum
Acid Devonian rock vs Calcareous chalkland.
Similar but different!
On June 4, 2026, Elsevier released CiteScore 2025, and Pedosphere achieved 13.1, ranking 9/167 in Q1 and the top 6% of soil science journals worldwide, up 1% from last year. We sincerely thank all experts and scholars for their interest in and support of the journal.
May 18, 1920, during a meeting of the German Geographical Society in Leipzig, meteorologist and geophysicist Alfred Wegener presents his theory that continents move over time, providing also a map showing the former position of the continents

May 5, 1818, birthday of German philosopher Karl #Marx. His thoughts on #economy & #society may well known, but Marx was actually also interested in #geology & copied some geological drawings, like the basalt cliffs of Staffa, Scotland ⚒️
Soils with relatively low degrees of pedogenic development, derived from mudstone badlands in southwestern Taiwan.
Vegetation root growth influences soil development, and soil profiles indicate organic matter inputs in the surface layer.

@tsujitomo indicating that the following earthquake occurred "fairly quickly." Then, near the surface, there are the last two meters, also with a gray (dry) to black (wet) layer, which seems to be the reworking (erosion followed by deposition) of humic paleosol further upstream ...
