From records preserved by the Buncombe County, North Carolina Genealogical Society:

In the early 1700s, my Scot 7th great-grandmother sailed to America with her husband and their eight children. Having paid for passage aboard a vessel carrying approximately 500 passengers, they brought with them all of their worldly possessions in pursuit of a new life.

During the voyage, the ship was blown off course and driven ashore along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Citing that the vessel required repairs, the captain landed the passengers on a nearby island with only a few days' provisions, assuring them he would return after repairing and careening the ship on a nearby island point, before continuing the voyage to Boston.

Instead, he absconded with all of the passengers' possessions, sailed away, and never returned, later selling their goods at another port. When the provisions were exhausted, approximately 450 of the 500 passengers perished. Among the dead were my 7th great-grandmother's husband and seven of her eight children.

A Native American fishing party eventually found the survivors and helped slowly nurse my 7th great-grandmother back to health, sustaining her with teaspoons of honey and water.

Upon remarriage, her later son, William Lee Davidson, went on to become a brigadier general in the North Carolina Patriot militia. On February 1, 1781, he was killed while leading a defensive charge at Cowan's Ford on the Catawba River against the advancing British forces commanded by Charles Cornwallis. The stand delayed the British advance long enough for General Nathanael Greene's Continental Army to withdraw safely and continue the campaign that ultimately culminated in the American victory at Yorktown.

Her lone surviving daughter from the shipwreck, my 6th great grandmother later settled in what is now western North Carolina, her husband and she helping establish Asheville, NC and the branch of the family from which I descend.

Not as satisfying an outcome as is portrayed in the series Outlander - but likely one of series of real life historical archives which inspired the fictional account.

Well, the USAF PhD EE that I know was working on it 30 years ago, and he's the dude who invented X Band Radar and the change detection algorithm they use on the satellites to detect all movements on the ground from one scan to the next!

He used a Kolmogorov-Gabor poly to build his own 10,400 node Neural Net to monitor the oil futures trading market. The AI/NN worked great, him, not so much! 😂😬 He lost a lot of money because he kept interfering with the automated trades and DIDN'T let the AI run it's algorithm.
