@miles_commodore What added to the flick for a number of us was that much was filmed at Ft. Knox, which we knew well enough. Years later, I directed dust initiation charge to take out by implosion a building that had been in the far distance of one of the Stripes scenes.
For soldiers then serving, it was funny as could be. Loved it then and have it on DVD to watch many times since.
Warren Oates as SFC Hulka was a number of NCOs I had served with rolled into one. His realistic portrayal of typical NCOs of the day added to the movie by playing off the humor of Bill Murray and John Candy.
Yes, underrated by most, but appreciated by almost all soldiers who saw it then.
