OTD in 1957: A tornado moved slowly through Oak Cliff and West Dallas TX. It damaged 574 buildings, mainly homes, injured 200 persons, killed ten, and caused economic loss of $4 million. This tornado was among the most photographed and studied in history.
On this date in 1933, most of the town of Helena in Shelby County (AL) was destroyed by a pre-dawn tornado. 14 were killed and 150 were injured; there were no warnings then. These aerial photos were taken by a pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps and are in the Helena Museum.
