After release, he eventually remarried but the marriage never lasted and he once again fell into debt. His career never recovered and he left Cheltenham penniless.
With his life in tatters and with little money, he tried to pay his meat bill to a butcher in Winchcombe St using a forged signature but was found out. Originally sentenced to transportation to Australia, the sentence was then commuted to a prison term.
