TINUBU: PERHAPS THE GREATEST PRESIDENT NIGERIA NEVER KNEW IT NEEDED

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is, take it or leave it, the most consequential Nigerian president since the colonial clerks first began assembling this country like a badly cut suit.

Not because he healed it, but because, in a little more than three years, he stripped it naked. Under him, masks fell.

The long game began well before 2023: the patient architecture of 2015 onward, the intimate acquaintance with electoral machinery, the courts that learned to treat inconvenient questions as technicalities.

2019 still lives in the national rumour as a server that forgot itself.

We watched the controversy surrounding the 2023 election: the IReV failure, INEC returning to court to reconfigure BVAS machines, the marathon election tribunal judgment, the argument over 25% in Abuja, the American forfeiture controversy, certificate disputes, and finally the Supreme Court bringing the litigation to an end.

Then came the great hush.

The pastors who once thundered against bad government suddenly discovered the spiritual gift of silence.

The bishops became contemplative monks.

Intellectuals who promised a one-year audit appear to have mislaid the calendar.

Lawyers who once treated every government as a defendant have grown suddenly fond of proportion.

Journalists who made a career of discomfort now measure their sentences.

Traditional stools that once trembled with moral authority have learned the dignity of silence.

Even the chorus has been professionalised: *On your mandate we shall stand, sung with the sincerity of men who have seen what happens to those who forget the lyrics.

Governors, discovering that party membership can be a form of legal hygiene, have crossed the floor in numbers that would embarrass a less sophisticated age.

Thirty-one state houses flying one colour is no coincidence.

Tinubu did not create all their weaknesses.

He merely switched on the light.

Meanwhile the country performs its other speciality: abduction, ransom, and the quiet calculation of which massacre is still printable.

Wike’s FCT administration began constructing homes for judges; judges attend the parties; the carpet is thick enough to hide a constitution. Things that were merely rotten under the old order have become theatrical.

That is Tinubu’s peculiar greatness. He has not invented Nigeria’s frailty.

He has only just marketed it so efficiently that when this chapter closes, whether in 2027 or 2031,the public may look around and find the usual saints unavailable for comment.

Priests, professors, lawyers, editors, thrones: the warehouse of role models will look strangely empty.

From that emptiness a country either rebuilds or dissolves. Dark joke, if you like: the most sophisticated president is the one who leaves you with no one left to believe except yourselves.
