@SirSimonClarke That is exactly the demographic of Hannah Spencer’s council ward (Hale) in my constituency. They chose to vote Tory, overturning a Green majority, in a recent council by-election.
Keir Starmer on trial by jury in the Socialist Lawyer magazine in 1992:
“The right to trial by jury is an important factor in the delicate balance between the power of the state and the freedom of the individual. The further it is restricted, the greater the imbalance. Despite the inevitable increase in costs, the Haldane Society urges that there be a right of trial by jury in all criminal cases.”
This NI raid will backfire.
It will drive GPs away / to retire by reducing their pay by 15%.
It’s targeting the most mobile part of the economy in lawyers and accountants all of whom could easily do their job from Dubai.
It will hand US / non-UK law firms an advantage as they won’t be subject to it to the same extent (large portion of partners outside the UK) so making British business less competitive and damaging growth.
Labour needs to learn how the economy works.
Even Starmer's own ministers don't understand why the UK would pay £18 billion in order to give territory away to a country thousands of miles away from the Chagos. They're not alone in their confusion: I have yet to see a single person with a rational explanation for the deal.
@JAHeale The issue is that he subscribes to a view of the rule of law which is “substantive”, aka political. He may not think he’s promoting rule by lawyers but that is exactly what it is.
1️⃣It is not a tax break.
2️⃣It will place greater pressure on the state sector.
3️⃣It will result in smaller private schools closing.
4️⃣It will result in fewer scholarships & bursaries.
5️⃣It will result in less community outreach & engagement.
➡️Widening the educational gap.
Lord Hague of Richmond will serve as the next Chancellor of University of Oxford, having won a majority of support in the final round of voting for the post.
Lord Hague becomes the 160th recorded Chancellor in the University’s history, a role that dates back at least 800 years.
This is an outrageous decision which defies common sense.
I was the only candidate who prioritised the cause of our hospital during the election. Altrincham deserves its Minor Injuries Unit - and over a thousand residents who share my view and signed a petition to that effect have been ignored by the Labour-led Integrated Care Board.

@tomseasman@FentonRedbush A great many others working in public health disagree with you Tom. But I’ll agree to differ. And I’m not sure there’s a definition of ‘serving politician’ but you clearly have a view.
