In 2012, Anambra State stood at a turning point in its development journey. At the center of this transformation was Peter Obi, whose administration focused heavily on fiscal discipline, strategic investments, and building a foundation for sustainable economic growth rather than short-term political gains.

That same year, the then President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, paid a historic working visit to the state one that would leave a lasting imprint on Anambra’s economic and infrastructural landscape. Unlike routine political visits, this occasion was marked by the commissioning of multiple large-scale projects, many of which were designed to unlock the state’s commercial potential and position it as a major economic hub in the South-East.

The visit highlighted a rare moment of synergy between state and federal leadership, with both tiers of government aligning around development, industrialization, and job creation.

Among the landmark projects commissioned were:

1. Orient Petroleum Oil
This project represented a bold step into the oil and gas sector for Anambra State. Located in the Anambra Basin, Orient Petroleum symbolized the state’s entry into energy production, with the potential to boost internally generated revenue, create employment opportunities, and reduce dependence on federal allocations over time.

2. SabMiller Brewery
The commissioning of the SabMiller Brewery in Onitsha was a major industrial milestone. Beyond beer production, the brewery stimulated the local economy by creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs—from factory workers to distributors and suppliers. It also strengthened Anambra’s profile as an attractive destination for both local and foreign investors.

3. Orange Drugs Company
A key player in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical and consumer goods sector, Orange Drugs expanded manufacturing capacity within the state. Its presence contributed to industrial growth, improved access to essential products, and further deepened the state’s manufacturing base.

4. Krisoral Company
Though less widely publicized, Krisoral Company added to the growing network of private-sector investments in Anambra. It reflected the broader strategy of encouraging indigenous businesses to scale and participate actively in the state’s economic expansion.

5. Onitsha Inland Port
One of the most strategic projects, the Onitsha Inland Port was designed to serve as a cargo hub for the South-East. By enabling goods to be transported via the River Niger, the port aimed to decongest Lagos seaports, reduce transportation costs, and enhance trade efficiency for businesses across the region.

6. Upper Iweka Super Highway
Perhaps one of the most visible symbols of the administration’s infrastructure drive, the Upper Iweka Super Highway was the first-ever 8-lane road in Anambra State. Located in one of the busiest commercial areas in Onitsha, this project significantly improved traffic flow, reduced congestion, and modernized the urban landscape.

Beyond the physical structures, these projects told a deeper story—one of vision, planning, and deliberate execution. The Obi administration prioritized creating an enabling environment where businesses could thrive, infrastructure could support growth, and investors could operate with confidence.

For many Nigerians, that period remains a powerful example of what focused leadership and strategic collaboration can achieve. It demonstrated that when governance is driven by clear economic goals and accountability, development is not just promised it is delivered and felt.

Years later, the impact of those projects continues to shape conversations about leadership, performance, and what is possible when public office is used as a platform for genuine transformation.
