Next month, @NigBarAssoc will elect its 33rd President. There are three candidates vying for the position: @OmoyemiAkangbe; @MuyiwaAkinboro; & @MrsBBold. All 3 are Senior Advocates of #Nigeria, #SANs.
The presidency of the NBA is rotated among the 3 major regions of the country at independence - East, North, & West.
This year, the presidency of the NBA rotates to the Western Region. The West comprises 2 informal associations.
One is @Egbeamofinoodua, which is made up of the 6 States south-west Nigeria. The other is the Midwest Bar, which comprises Delta & Edo States. These are informal regional arrangements that are not formally part of the NBA.
In this round, the Midwest Bar has chosen not to field any candidate. So, the president to be elected will be from one of the 6 States of SW Nigeria.
For this round of elections, the Egbe Amofin has chosen to line itself up behind @MuyiwaAkinboro as their preferred candidate. They have gone further to seek to require the NBA to exclude other candidates from the contest so that Mr. Akinboro can emerge unopposed.
That, however, wld be unfair to people who are not part of the Egbe Amofin & to the wider body of @NigBarAssoc. It wld also be a profound subversion of the constitutional & institutional arrangements of the Association.
To drive home their demand, the Egbe Amofin went to the High Court of Oyo State in Ibadan to get an order of court to suspend the NBA's electoral season until they get their way. In the end, that case has suffered uneasy suspension.
Yet, some powerfully leveraged interests are insistent on prescribing to the Association whom its next president must be. They are even threatening - if they do not get their way - to get the Attorney-General of the Federation to "nationalise" the Association & designate a #SoleAdministrator for it.
Sadly for them, the NBA is an NGO, there is no legal framework for achieving this end. The problem they have is that they have refused to adapt to the reality of #OnLawyerOneVote; #OLOV.
If you are a young(er) lawyer in #Nigeria, there is a presidential candidate in this election who wants to abolish #OLOV if he wins. Ask yourself the question if that is what you want.
For the 1st time since 2006, this year, there is on the slate, a woman who has a real & competitive chance of becoming the 1st woman to be directly elected as the President of @NigBarAssoc & only the 2nd female president in the history of the Association.
Will you #BBold & be part of making history?
A criminal is always a step ahead, so collaboration, knowledge sharing and technology tools are essential to keep pace and effectively tackle economic and financial crimes in Africa, says our Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and distinguished keynote speaker, H.E Fatou Bensouda, former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court and current High Commissioner of the Gambia to the United Kingdom. She commended the @Nigeria_ILA for its leadership and efforts in promoting the clarification of international law on economic and financial crimes.
H.E Bensouda stated this while addressing journalists at the 9th Annual Conference of the International Law Association-Nigerian Branch held at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Abuja.

Today, I honour Chief Folake Solanke, CON SAN, a trailblazer whose life has been a profound act of giving through leadership, courage, and excellence. As the first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria, she did more than achieve a persoal milestone or break barriers; she created pathways, opening doors for generations of women to rise and thrive in the legal profession and beyond.
Her legacy is rooted in service and voice. As the first African and first non-caucasian President of Zonta International, she consistently used her platform to advance the cause of women and advocate for justice. She has not only given her intellect to the law, but her influence to society, amplifying the voice and visibility of women on the world stage.
Yet, perhaps even more remarkable is that at 94, Chief Solanke continues to give. Still sharp, deeply cerebral, and unwavering in discipline, she remains a constant presence at Nigerian Bar Association Ibadan Branch meetings - always punctual, always engaged, and still making meaningful contributions. Where many step back with age, she leans in, embodying a lifelong commitment to service, excellence, and responsibility.
Her life is a powerful reminder that giving is not a moment, it is a mindset. Through mentorship, institution-building, an unwavering commitment to excellence and her enduring example, Chief Folake Solanke has given access, inspiration, and a standard of excellence that challenges us all, and we have gained the courage to lead and serve with integrity, and the determination to uphold the values she so powerfully embodies.

Chief A. J. Offiah, SAN, stands as a defining figure of service-driven leadership in Nigeria’s legal profession. As the first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria from the South-East and a former Attorney-General & Commissioner for Justice of Enugu State, her distinction is not merely in titles earned, but in the enduring value she has given to the Bar, the Bench, and the society.
As Attorney-General and later as Facilitator of the Enugu State Justice Reform Team, she invested her expertise in reshaping the justice system to be more transparent, efficient, and humane. She advanced criminal justice reforms, contributed to the development and implementation of modern legal frameworks, promoted technological innovation in adjudication, and supported the Witness Support Unit and multi-door courthouse systems to improve access to justice.
Beyond institutional reform, through mentorship, She has shaped generations of lawyers with the ethics, discipline, and standards that define the profession. Her leadership roles in FIDA and the NBA reflect a sustained commitment to professional development, gender advocacy, and the strengthening of legal institutions.
Chief Mrs. Anayo Justina Offiah, SAN has given her intellect to reform, her voice to advocacy, and her time to mentorship. In return, we have gained a stronger legal system, a more grounded profession and a society better served by a more accessible and humane administration of justice.
She has helped build systems that will outlive her, proving that true success lies not only in personal achievement, but in the legacy one leaves behind.

Anyway, I saw this yesterday on IG and it made me super happy. 😍😍😍
It was time to say goodbye to our wonderful cohort of Young Professionals of 2025. Always a bittersweet experience. Thank you to the 19 young minds who have contributed so much to the WTO this year and I hope learned so much as well.
Many thanks to ITTC, Samer Seif El Yazal and his team, for their outstanding work on this. Thanks also to ambassadors who came for the ceremony. We’ll miss the two YPs who were in our office, Hiral Hirani and Stan Sanon, thank you for your hard work.
Excellent speech by Bernard Chiafuchu of Cameroon on behalf of all the Young Professionals. It was so nice to give the Nigerian YP, Ovonlen Ebhohimhen, a big goodbye hug. Looking to all the YPs to be ambassadors for the WTO.
Olumide Akpata remains the best candidate for the LP Edo state guber primaries. He's the only LP aspirant that I can comfortably stick out my neck for, following extensive research.
This is based on his stellar record in the private, corporate, and public sectors.
I have learnt that it's always best to stake your hopes on people who have excelled in all 3 sectors; and that is exactly why I have pitched my tent with Olumide Akpata.
I hope the LP delegates do the right thing and hand him the party's ticket, as he's our best chance at the polls.
