Yvonne Okwara: The Voice Behind the Mic

Yvonne Okwara was born in Nairobi as the last born in a family of three children. While many people assume she comes from Nyanza, Yvonne is a proud Luhya from Busia in Western Kenya.

After studying at All Saints Cathedral and Kianda School, Yvonne pursued a degree in Microbiology at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). But instead of spending her career in a laboratory, she chose the microphone and built an impressive career in journalism.

She began her television journey at KBC Channel 1 while still young, before rising through the ranks at QFM, NTV Kenya and KTN. Today, she is a celebrated journalist at Citizen TV, where she hosts “The Explainer”, a programme that has earned her widespread recognition for her sharp and fearless interviewing style, particularly when putting politicians under pressure.

Her professionalism and commanding presence on the news desk have also earned her the title of the “Queen of News Gang” at Citizen TV.

Yvonne Okwara is more than just a journalist. She is a powerful voice, a skilled interviewer and one of Kenya’s most respected media personalities.

I was just thinking about my brother's journey and I'm honestly blown away.

The guy scored 296/500 marks in KCPE and still went on to get an A at Miwani Secondary. Then he became the valedictorian of the BSc Biochemistry class at Egerton, earned a Master's with Distinction and the Vice-Chancellor's Award.

The crazy part? He secured his Master's scholarship before even graduating with his Bachelor's, and his PhD scholarship at Oklahoma State University before finishing his Master's.
And now I'm finding out from the Uni that poached him from
OSU that he won the Top Poster Award at ISTH 2025 in Washington, D.C., standing out among 1,500+ research presentations.
How do you even do all that? 😂
