Someone said that rewards don’t work on their child. Nothing entices them; not ice cream, not candy, not even an iPad or new toys.

They were almost bragging about it. I wanted to respond, but I thought about what they probably wouldn’t want to hear and how hurtful it might sound.

So I’ll just say this: if your child is genuinely not interested in anything; not preferred foods, toys, sensory activities, games, attention, outings, or anything else that would normally bring them enjoyment or motivate them, please don’t simply assume they are stubborn, unusually disciplined, or that reward systems “just don’t work” for them.

A complete lack of interest or pleasure can sometimes be a sign that something else is going on. It could relate to development, communication, sensory processing, emotional well-being, or another medical or behavioral concern.

It is worth discussing with your child’s pediatrician.
