I am honored to be sworn in by Secretary-General @AntonioGuterres as UN High Commissioner for @Refugees.
I take this oath with a deep sense of responsibility to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and stand with those forced to flee.
Today I met with the new United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Barham Salih. We discussed strengthening global solidarity and ensuring sustainable solutions for refugees and host communities. At a time of record displacement, multilateral cooperation is not optional — it is essential.
I spent my first day of Ramadan in the Rohingya camps in Cox Bazaar, Bangladesh, with Mr Bilal Erdogan. We saw some incredible work being done at a field hospital, school, and vocational training centre, all thanks to TIKA and Diyanet Vakfi. But, we can do more for our Rohingya brothers and sisters. Let's come together and make a difference!
A @WFP aircraft just released life‑saving food bags from the sky… but where is this mission taking place today? 🌍✈️
Hint: communities in this young & landlocked country rely on airdrops as a critical lifeline.

Today I begin my tenure as High Commissioner for @Refugees.
Guided by our shared humanity and legal mandate, we will work with our partners and host nations, to protect refugees, deliver durable solutions, and confront the displacement crises affecting millions of people.
More than 1,100 people fleeing insecurity in Mali have crossed into Mauritania this week, the UN refugee agency reported Friday, saying conditions were "difficult" for the newcomers.

I welcome the election by the General Assembly of @BarhamSalih of Iraq, as the next @UN High Commissioner for @Refugees.
My utmost gratitude to @FilippoGrandi for his leadership & tireless efforts in protecting refugees, displaced persons & stateless people.
I am honoured to have been elected as the incoming United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. As a former refugee, I know first-hand how protection and opportunity can change the course of a life. That experience will inform a leadership approach grounded in empathy, pragmatism, and a principled commitment to international law. My foremost responsibility will be to refugees and others forced to flee—upholding their rights and dignity and advancing durable solutions so that displacement remains a temporary situation, not a permanent fate.
At a time of record displacement and severe pressure on humanitarian resources, delivering on UNHCR’s mandate requires a renewed focus on impact, accountability, and efficiency. This is a shared responsibility. UNHCR will build on the important reforms undertaken in recent years to strengthen operational effectiveness and value for money. I will work with Member States and partners across the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to mobilize the capacity, resources, and collective will needed to reach those most in need.
I am grateful to the Secretary-General, António Guterres, and to the General Assembly for their confidence, and to High Commissioner Filippo Grandi for his principled and tireless leadership during a period of extraordinary global challenge.
I look forward to working closely with UNHCR’s dedicated staff, states, partners, host communities, and, most importantly, refugees themselves to advance protection and durable solutions fit for both the promise and the perils of the 21st century.
It’s official!
@BarhamSalih, former President of Iraq, has been elected as the next High Commissioner for Refugees.
Having been a refugee himself, he brings powerful lived experience to lead UNHCR.
We’re excited to welcome him soon. 💙
Since the last Global Refugee Forum two years ago, we have seen increasing conflict, displacement & cuts in humanitarian funding.
I urge the world to do more.
Let's continue to invest in refugees & host communities, and defend & uphold the right to seek asylum & protection.
I congratulate this year’s UNHCR #NansenAward laureate Chief Martin Azia Sodea.
He and his community are leading by example, welcoming refugees and giving them the opportunity to be self-reliant.
He’s an inspiration to us all.
