On Windows, you usually download an .exe, double-click it, and you’re done.

On Linux, you suddenly have four choices and everyone has strong opinions about which one is “correct” 😭

The package manager is the traditional Linux way. You install software directly from your distribution’s repositories using commands like apt, dnf, or pacman. It’s fast, integrates nicely with the system, and updates everything from one place. That’s why many Linux users prefer it whenever possible.

Then there’s Snap. Applications come bundled with most of their dependencies, making them easier to distribute across different Linux distributions. The trade-off is that some users complain about larger package sizes and slower startup times.

Flatpak follows a similar idea but has become particularly popular for desktop applications. It isolates apps from the rest of the system and allows developers to ship newer versions without waiting for Linux distributions to update their repositories.

And then you have AppImage, which is probably the closest thing to a portable Windows application. Download one file, make it executable, and run it. No installation process, no package manager, and often no administrator privileges required.

What’s funny is that asking Linux users how they install applications can start debates that last longer than the actual installation.

Because in Linux, there are usually several ways to accomplish the same thing.

And that’s both the beauty and the chaos of the ecosystem.
