What gets measured gets better. 📈
The Mental Health at Work Index™ 2026 Annual Report is out today, and the findings are striking:
▶︎ Only 1 in 4 organizations has a formal mental health strategy, and those that do see significantly better outcomes, including 36% lower voluntary turnover.
▶︎ Three-quarters of organizations don’t systematically measure whether their mental health efforts are working; those that do are less than half as likely to report declining engagement.
▶︎ Organizations that connect mental health efforts to performance metrics see the strongest results; those that don’t see nearly 25% of their workforce turn over each year.
Strategy is the starting line, measurement drives improvement, and performance closes the loop. As our VP of One Mind at Work, Dr. David Ballard, puts it: "Good intentions are not a strategy. How do you know your investments are making a difference?"
The answer starts with measurement.

When someone you love tells you they're thinking about suicide, what do you say?
One Mind Lived Experience Council member Amanda Geisinger knows firsthand that most people, even those who care deeply, get it wrong. Not out of cruelty, but because of false beliefs, fear, and the silence that stigma creates.
In her latest piece for the One Mind Lived Experience Blog, Amanda brings two beloved cartoon characters, Cupcake and Popsicle, into a conversation most of us don't know how to start. With honesty, warmth, and hard-won insight, she walks through the most common missteps and offers something better: words that actually help.

"Disclosure is not the problem. Stigma is."
@UmaRChatterjee entered her scientific career already publicly open about her lived experience with serious mental illness. She was warned it would disqualify her from the field.
Instead, she became a neuroscience PhD candidate, leading the first known protein-level studies in human OCD brain tissue, board member of the Society for Neuroscience’s Upper Midwest Chapter, and a member of the One Mind Lived Experience Council.
In her new essay, "The Cost of Telling the Truth: Disclosure, Serious Mental Illness, and the Systems That Decide Who Belongs," Uma makes a case that goes far beyond her own story: that disclosure without structural support becomes extraction, and that the goal isn't to pressure people to share, it's to build systems where honesty is no longer punished.

Alex Sheehan, award winning mental health advocate, Behavioral Health Program Manager, Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) candidate, and Health Policy Research Scholar, was selected in 2025 alongside two other advocacy leaders to join the One Mind Lived Experience Council.
Alex’s work examines how lived experience drives innovation and sustainability in state level mental and behavioral health policy. He believes policy is the lever for change, most effective when grounded in equity, dignity, and the voices of those directly impacted.
Founders in our Accelerator quickly learn that lived experience is essential. One startup developing a neurotechnology device was investing time and funding in a design that would not have worked for the people it aimed to serve. When individuals living with the condition joined the process, they helped redirect development. The result was a product that works in the real world because it was built with the people who need it most.
Launched in 2024, the One Mind Lived Experience Initiative ensures that individuals with lived experience help shape research priorities, workplace frameworks, and innovation strategy, embedding community voice into system level change. Through these efforts, council members are inspiring leaders to foster cultures of acceptance, demonstrating that when people with lived experience are treated with respect and dignity, everyone benefits.

One Mind’s Co-founder and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer, Brandon Staglin (@BStaglin) channels his deep experience in leadership, advocacy, and personal schizophrenia recovery to drive mental health innovation and community engagement to heal lives.
As Chair of the One Mind Lived Experience Council, Brandon guides employers to successfully hire, retain, and benefit from the unique skills of workers with lived experience of serious mental illness. Brandon's work centers on a simple but powerful idea: people with lived experience of serious mental health challenges bring irreplaceable insight to the table—in research, in workplaces, and in policy.

In January 2019, a snowboarding accident left Dr. Edward Twomey with a brain bleed and an emergency craniotomy. It also changed the course of his science. 🧠
In the latest post from the One Mind Lived Experience Blog, Dr. Ed Twomey, a neuroscientist and Associate Professor at @HopkinsMedicine (@JohnsHopkins), and 2025 One Mind Rising Star Award recipient, reflects on how his journey through traumatic brain injury and debilitating anxiety redirected and informed his research.
Dr. Twomey's work has since uncovered how temperature affects neurotransmitter receptor function, revealed the mechanism behind the brain's primary signaling chemical, and opened a promising new path for neuropsychiatric drug development.
"My lived experience changed how I think and changed how I do science," Dr. Twomey writes. "Experience can be heavy but also clarifying."

We are humbled and honored by this recognition. What started as a bold vision has grown into something truly special, and it only exists because of the founders, partners, mentors, and advocates who show up every single day for this community and for the people mental health innovation is meant to serve.
This is what happens when the right people come together around the right mission.

This Mental Health Awareness Month we're spotlighting members of the One Mind community—meet Dr. Kafui Dzirasa.
2013 One Mind Rising Star Award recipient and member of the One Mind Scientific Advisory Board, Dr. @KafuiDzirasa is a brain pacemaker pioneer and health equity advocate.
As a Distinguished Professor at @DukeMedSchool, Dr. Dzirasa’s lab is uncovering brain-wide electrical patterns that define emotional states, laying groundwork for neuromodulation-based psychiatric therapies.
His research focuses on how disruptions in the brain’s electrical networks affect emotions and contribute to psychiatric disorders. Using innovative tools in psychiatry, neurophysiology, and biomedical engineering, his team studies the unique brain activity patterns linked to emotional states and tests whether restoring healthy brain rhythms can improve mood and behavior. This work is opening new pathways toward treatments for depression and other serious mental health conditions.
For 20 years, the Rising Star Awards have invested in bold ideas and exceptional scientists like Dr. Dzirasa. This month we're spotlighting members of the One Mind community who are living out our mission—meet Dr. Hilary Marusak.
Hilary Marusak, PhD, is a developmental neuroscientist and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Wayne State University. In 2024, she was named a One Mind Rising Star in Mental Health Research for her pioneering work investigating adolescent suicide risk and the role of the endocannabinoid system in brain development and emotional regulation. Supported by a $300,000 grant, her research seeks to identify biological markers that better predict risk and inform targeted interventions for vulnerable youth.
Through leadership of the THINK Lab and the Division of Cannabinoids in Neurodevelopment (CANDID), Dr. Marusak advances research in pediatric anxiety, trauma, PTSD, and neurodevelopment. Beyond the lab, she mentors trainees and champions science communication and public engagement to reduce stigma and translate discovery into impact.
For 20 years, the Rising Star Awards have invested early in bold ideas and exceptional scientists like Dr. Marusak. Since 2005, One Mind has supported 54 awardees across 37 leading institutions, investing more than $14 million in breakthrough science spanning major mental health conditions.
