What Will The International Community Say Now?
When former President @M_Farmaajo engineered parliament’s extension of his term in 2021, he argued that he had not personally extended his mandate — that parliament had given him the extension.
Last night, Prez @HassanSMohamud made a similar argument in the attached video, stating that parliament, through the constitutional changes he spearheaded, had given themselves — as well as him and his cabinet — an additional year in office.
This is despite his earlier public position that his mandate was four years and that even if the constitution were amended to provide for five-year terms, such changes would not apply to him, parliament, or his cabinet, but only to the next government.
Below are selected quotes showing how the international community reacted in April 2021 when Farmaajo’s term extension was announced.
I am wondering what they will say now, particularly given that @US2SOMALIA and @UKinSomalia representatives convened and facilitated three days of mediation talks.
The African Union Peace and Security Council:
“Condemns the actions of 12 April 2021 by the House of the People, which extended the mandate of the President and the Parliament, as effectively delaying the elections, thereby undermining unity and stability of the country, the nascent democratic and constitutional processes, which also threaten the relative peace and security, as well as the important gains that Somalia has made over the years with the support of the AU and other partners with huge sacrifices;”
April 2021 — UN Security Council:
“called on all parties to reject violence and resume dialogue as a matter of urgency and without precondition. They called on Somalia’s leaders to recognise and build upon the many areas of agreement already reached, to resolve their remaining differences and to put the interests of the people of Somalia first, within a Somali-owned, Somali-led electoral process, and with an agreed timetable, as soon as possible”;
April 13, 2021 — European Union:
“Yesterday, the Lower House of the Somali Parliament voted to a de-facto extension of the mandate of the President and the Federal Government by two years … This action undermines the longstanding effort, supported by the EU and the international community, to rebuild Somalia through consensus.
The international community, including the EU, have repeatedly and publicly expressed that we could under no circumstances accept an extension of the government mandate, or any partial or parallel process related to the elections …The European Union believes that the passage and signing of this resolution will divide Somalia, impose additional delays and constitute a grave threat to the peace and stability of Somalia and its neighbours. It certainly does not serve the interests of the people of Somalia.
April 13, 2021 — USA
“The United States Opposes Federal Government Term Extensions
Press Statement — Secretary of State
“The United States is deeply disappointed by the Federal Government of Somalia’s decision to approve a legislative bill that extends the mandates of the president and parliament by two years.
We have stressed repeatedly that … the United States does not support mandate extensions … Such actions would be deeply divisive, undermine the federalism process and political reforms that have been at the heart of the country’s progress and partnership with the international community, and divert attention away from countering al-Shabaab.”
Also attached is a video and transcript of then-opposition leader imploring Somalia’s international partners to take a firm stand and call a spade a spade:
“Friends of Somalia, we will advise them to be part of the solution. They should stand with where the solution lies, and they should tell any individual who is obstructing a solution: stop, you are not contributing to a resolution.”
“Problems should not be allowed to drag on and fester…” says the then opposition leader HSM
President @HSM says Somalia has officially entered the era of “one person, one vote.”
Now let us examine the masterpiece of democracy that reportedly took place in Baidoa:
1. First, candidates were kindly invited to register through a JSP link and join the party. Because under JSP democracy apparently comes with mandatory membership.
2. Candidates were then encouraged to bring as many voters as possible. In simple terms: welcome to the vote marketplace. Prices reportedly ranged from $5 to $20 per voter depending on competition, demand, and seat availability.
3. Want to run for parliament? Wonderful. Just pay the small “democracy activation fee” of $1,500, conveniently shared between the party and the electoral commission. Very modern system.
4. After that, actual votes reportedly became less important because the real counting seemed to happen somewhere between the chairman of the commission and the JSP secretary-general.
5. Then came the transparency phase. After deciding who they actually wanted, the results were announced. To make everything look slightly democratic, a few seats were generously distributed to coalition parties, commonly referred to by Somalis as “hidden JSP.”
6. Interestingly, only JSP candidates had the honor of seeing their names publicly announced. The rest of the parties apparently received a polite “thank you for participating” message with only the number of seats attached.
7. And finally, for the grand finale, some people who reportedly won were removed anyway because they failed the famous “trust test.” In this new democratic model, winning votes is apparently not enough. You also need management approval.
So to summarize:
They control the commission.
They control the voting machines.
They control the counting process.
They control the results.
And somehow this is still called competition.
At this point, I honestly do not know whether to call this an election, a business franchise, or a fully managed political subscription service.
Here are two men who decide who is in and who is out.
Mr Rigathi
You cannot demand a presidential debate when you have already been impeached and stripped of the very legitimacy required to contest for public office. A presidential debate is for candidates, not for individuals nursing political nostalgia.
It is political fiction to imagine yourself on a ballot you are legally barred from appearing on.
You say you do not debate 'employees.' Yet here you are, issuing statements about one. If you truly believed I was beneath you, you would not tremble at the thought of engaging me.
The Presidential Debate next year will be between duly qualified candidates. It will not feature those disqualified by history, by law and by their own record.
Until then, focus less on imaginary podiums and more on explaining how you squandered the one you once had. @rigathi
@Cobratate You are the biggest fraud in the world and you are attacking Somalia to get recognition from the white bigots in America. See a doctor!
Use a mirror and see your color.

Minneapolis has become a tale of two cities. One for the wealthy and well connected, and one for all of us—the renters, transit riders, and working families who are left with vetoes and broken promises. We need a Mayor who stands with working people, and works as hard as we do.

Somalia must be freed not only from the grip of terrorism but also from the hands of the corrupt elite falsely presenting themselves as political leaders.
The current regime under President HSM, which I refer to as the government of 'National Betrayal and Self-Interest,'(Dowlada Qiyana Qaran iyo Dan Qasa) is irreparably corrupted and should be removed from power, and should be barred from holding public office. Somalia cannot defeat terrorism, cannot progress, and will never achieve a dignified quality of life while these corrupt politicians remain in leadership positions.
How could we expect any better from a group of individuals who are morally and mentally corrupted? Somalia needs a grassroots revolution.
