@mattblethen26 Hot take here:
Regional or national "teams/organizations" shouldn't be a kid's primary "team".
If you're saying you have a regional travel team, but it's just a group of recruited players who meet in the same town to chase hardware, that's not a team and it's not coaching.
@xanbarksdale "Terrible behavior in the @NBA can be traced to the Harlem Globetrotters!" is basically the same sentence....
WHAT is to be gained from this? Why's dancing on a baseball field an all-or-nothing thing?
Ridiculous take.
It's okay to just enjoy things, you guys. It really is.
@OsheaJacksonJr Negativity is easy. So many would rather find things to clutch their pearls about than practice empathy.
Sad, right?
I'm gonna chill here and work on those positive vibes. It's more pleasant here.
@DanJMasters Maaaaan, lemme tell you I've been blessed to have some WONDERFUL parents on teams I coach. They're not blind...they see weaknesses in their own kid and others, but they also see growth and potential in the rest of the team. Not every team has those parents and it's BEAUTIFUL!
@coachk6463 Depends on your goals for the team.
School? You can make cuts, and coaches are paid for wins, so you can set bars far higher.
Travel? Depends on the organization.
Reasons matter too. Other sports, split families, family being a priority, faith....
@JermaineCurtis The simplicity is what's beautiful to me. It's what I preach at every level I coach, and why this really resonates.
That said, I'm just a youth/HS coach. The more I learn, the more "simple" has been highlighted and for good reason. I see success with simplicity!
@theblockspot The Ford Model A was THE technological leap vehicle of its time.
2026 isn't the same time. Vehicles aren't built the same way. Processes have changed. Doesn't mean people don't still fawn over the Model A.
My daughter told me she's happy I'm her dad and her coach because I try to help everyone grow even if we don't win as much as we could.
She's 12.
A teammate of hers told me once that she's happy I'm her coach and she loves being on our team.
Dude...what's better than that??
@MIballObserver@LetItEat21 Red flags include "Looking to pick up a solid pitcher for this weekend" and "Want to join an elite travel team?".
Just one guy's opinion... One guy's experience-based opinion....
@wbnolefan@LetItEat21 Player fees go toward a whole lot of things (field space, equipment replacement, facility maintenance, tournament fees, uniform costs, administrative fees, etc) that people may or may not think of, but our org is all volunteer-run.
Started coaching for my own kids, and it's fun!
@dfsupdates@LetItEat21 100%!!
I've been fortunate to have the great families we spend time with on our travel weekends, and other parents are just as loud for my kid as their own. Awesome group, and the kids have fun every tournament (and just happen to bring home some hardware at times too).
@LetItEat21 Best coach FOR YOUR KID!
Some families like how I coach and align with my goals, and some want something different. THAT'S PERFECTLY OKAY!!!!
If the atmosphere is healthy, your kid grows as a human and a player, and they're having fun, then go for it.
@CoachBeede So, my oldest wanted to play in college (went to a JUCO with a scholarship, completely toxic, plans changed). Eventually learned she wanted to prove some haters wrong and that she could play at the college level. Did that, happy with playing one more year of travel.
@CoachBeede My youngest wants to play in college (she's 12 and has goals plus gobs of talent) eventually. Trying to learn lessons from my oldest's experience, I'm trying to figure out what the true goal is. Is it to PLAY in college, or to PAY for college?
Those goals don't always match.
@CoachBeede The first couple years, I was a car post-game evaluator. Good or bad, and I think either way it was the wrong decision.
These days, we get in the car and I sigh and say "I had so much fun today!" Then we go get something to eat and if they talk, I'll talk. If not, we eat.
@CJMonroe_10 Depends on why you coach?
I like coaching because I'm good at it and kids need good coaches and a good place to play. I volunteer with JV because I get to work on player development and improve the program. It's fun, and I don't care about the money at the high school level.
