have y’all noticed how Black women are collectively bracing themselves for the hate they’ll get during this election season now that Harris is running? this is what we mean when we speak of “chronic/anticipatory stressors w/ adverse health consequences” they regularly endure smh
On this day in 1988, the late Dr. Patricia Era Bath received a patent for her Invention, the Laserphaco Probe. It’s used worldwide in eye surgery to remove cataracts and she also founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness.
She restored sight to millions of people suffering from cataracts.
On May 17, 1988, Dr. Patricia Era Bath is a Black American ophthalmologist, inventor, and academic received a patent for the Laserphaco Probe an apparatus that efficiently removes cataracts by using laser technology making her the first Black American woman to receive a patent for a medical purpose on this date in 1988.
The device which quickly and nearly painlessly dissolves the cataract with a laser, irrigates and cleans the eye and permits the easy insertion of a new lens is used internationally to treat the disease. She has broken ground for women and Black Americans in a number of areas.
Prior to Bath, no woman had served on the staff of the Jules Stein Eye Institute, headed a post-graduate training program in ophthalmology, or been elected to the honorary staff of the UCLA Medical Center. Before Bath, no black person had served as a resident in ophthalmology at New York University and no black woman had ever served on staff as a surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center.
Bath is the first Black American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical purpose. The holder of four patents, she also founded the company of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in Washington, D.C. Bath has been honored by two of her universities.
Hunter College placed her in its "hall of fame" in 1988 and Howard University declared her a "Howard University Pioneer in Academic Medicine" in 1993. A children's picture book on her life and science work, The Doctor with an Eye for Eyes:

In 1968, Jesse White,Ben Chester’s son, sued the KKK for his father's death.
The judge ruled in his favor & awarded $1 million. While this ruling set a precedent, being the first time that the Klan, is held responsible, Jesse and his family never received compensation.
@JakeTaskey@sharpless89 @me_sijay @brookparis@AfricanArchives as "The Landlord Game." The Parker Brothers ironically wanted a monopoly on this and her other games and bought out her game patents before renaming it to Monopoly. Those are just some examples. You can look up more if interested. Not hard to find.

@JakeTaskey@sharpless89 @me_sijay @brookparis@AfricanArchives Sorry, I'm not on Twitter often, but sure!
Let's start with something familiar. Heard of Jack Daniels whiskey? The recipe was actually created by the family's master distiller, who was a slave. Monopoly was created by a white woman named Elizabeth Maggie and patented 1/2
@sharpless89 @me_sijay @brookparis@AfricanArchives Funny you say white men invented most the important inventions when it's been proven time and again that many white men just patented or took credit for the inventions/discoveries of people of color AND white women.
@PaleoDM@danielhkwan I agree. And while it doesn't solve the issues that Race had, we can acknowledge that Race is a concept designed to "other" POCs. The issues with Inter-Species relationships not being able to produce viable offspring can be solved with the fact that these are magical species.
@itsginnydi My fave NPC encountered was a paladin who was annoyed by our group but was tasked with accompanying us on our journey. He famously, and literally, slapped our rogue with a Lay On Hands and said, "Heal Bitch". I forgot his name but will never forget that moment.
bell hooks: "We have to constantly critique imperialist white supremacist patriarchal culture because it is normalized by mass media and rendered unproblematic.”
Let me break this down for you, and y'all can go break this down for others.
"Rest in power" is not the woke version of "Rest in peace." It's not just cool, it's not a way to show you really liked someone, it's not something you say when a famous person you really liked dies.
