Positioning for Success in the Transition Zone

When times are good, we often assume they will last forever. We underestimate the downside and become comfortable. Yet when tough times arrive, we make the opposite mistake. We struggle to imagine that they will ever end, and because of that, we fail to recognize and optimize for new opportunities.

Success is often found in the transition zone.

When the Covid pandemic hit, we lost almost $100,000 and had to let go of 18 of our best people. For months, I worked alone in my office. It was a painful season that forced me to slow down and rethink everything.
But something unexpected came out of that forced downtime.

I wrote The Great Financial Rebuild, a book that continues to give long after it was published. I also conceived the Bitbricks Seguku Hill Apartments project, an idea that went on to raise over $500,000 and became an iconic crowd-funded real estate development. In many ways, it provided a blueprint that many others would later follow.

I learned that difficult seasons are not merely periods to survive; they are opportunities to reposition. While others are focused on what has been lost, those who succeed are often preparing for what comes next.

History reminds us that neither prosperity nor hardship lasts forever. Seasons change. Markets recover. New ideas emerge. People reinvent themselves. The key is to avoid becoming too comfortable during good times and too hopeless during difficult ones.

Success belongs to those who can see possibilities while others see only problems.

When all is said and done, it is hope that keeps the world moving. Hope allows us to look beyond the pain of the present and invest in the possibilities of the future. Because success is rarely built at the peak of prosperity. More often, it is forged in the transition zone.
