Online spaces can connect, empower and amplify voices. But for many women and girls, they can also become spaces where harassment, abuse and intimidation take place.

At the HerSafeSpace Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue, civil society organisations, digital rights advocates, government representatives, media professionals, youth leaders and other stakeholders came together to examine technology-facilitated gender-based violence and discuss practical ways to create safer digital spaces.

Bringing different perspectives to the table, the dialogue opened up important conversations around the challenges women and girls face online and the collective action needed to address them.

Youth-led Social Media Advocacy Campaigns Focused on Women’s Electoral Participation in Abuja

This event was organised by @fiap_es in collaboration with FactCheckAfrica, under the EU Support to ECOWAS in Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) Project.

From 25th - 27th of August, we will be bringing together 100+ Digital Democracy Champions from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones for the Train-the-Trainer Programme: Strengthening Digital Integrity and Inclusive Participation for Nigeria 2027.

Over three days, participants will build practical knowledge and skills around misinformation and fact-checking, digital safety and online rights, online gender-based violence, civic mobilisation and community action planning through expert-led sessions.

We intend on strengthening the capacity of young people to promote safer, more informed and inclusive digital participation as Nigeria looks towards 2027.

Faruq is a student under exam pressure, tempted by an easier way out. That is the premise of "The Shadow of the Shortcut," a 10-page storybook written by Olalere Goodness, a pupil at Bishop Smith Memorial College, with the help of an AI tool.

In it, the decision to cheat pulls Faruq into consequences he cannot undo. He was punished for his actions, and when he returned to school, he understood what it costs to earn a result honestly.

BBYDI came across the storybook during a monitoring visit to the college, months after teachers there completed our AI literacy training and passed it on to their students.

During the visit, students also showed AI-assisted revision work and digital flyer designs, while teachers reported using AI to plan lessons and prepare their classes.

The visit was meant to test whether the training the teachers had received was having an impact on their students. It was refreshing to see the students show their newfound AI skills and how it is used in their classrooms, AI Literacy Clubs and students' own work.

This work is part of the AI Literacy for Everyday People programme, convened by Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative.

Across the schools in the programme, teachers and students are beginning to decide for themselves what responsible, useful AI adoption can look like.

In Ilorin today, young people are walking into the National Youth Dialogue on Just Transition, ready to talk about what Nigeria's shift to a greener economy actually means for them. Who gains from it? What happens to people's livelihoods? And whose voices are still being left out?

That's the conversation under way, held under the theme "Advancing Climate Justice through Inclusive Youth Leadership in Nigeria." The starting point is what communities are living through, and the push is for young people to help shape the policies they'll be living with long after today.

The conversation moved from what needs to change to how we communicate that change. @AtikuNafisa of Naija Feminist Collective led a session on Platform-Native Content Design & Message Pillars for Feminist Campaigns, exploring how advocacy messages need to adapt across socials.
