We’re excited to spotlight TERNA MAG, a member of the GEK TERNA Group!

⛰️ Based in the mineral-rich northern region of Evia Island (Greece), TERNA MAG has been at the forefront of magnesite extraction since the late 1950s. The area is renowned for its high-purity, boron-free, low-iron cryptocrystalline magnesite—a valuable resource powering multiple industries.

🏭 Their product portfolio includes:
▫️ Raw magnesite
▫️ Caustic calcined magnesite
▫️ Dead burned magnesite
▫️ Mineral flame-retardants

⚒️ Operations span two major sites:
🔹 An underground mine in Gerorema
🔹 An open-pit mine in Kakavos

We’re proud to spotlight the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology at the Department of Agrobiotechnology, IFA Tulln in Lower Austria, from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).
As a leading institution dedicated to the advancement of research and education in the field of materials and #bioremediation recycling and microbial metabolism, its primary mission is to improve the quality of life and protect our precious natural resources.

🌱 𝐁𝐎𝐊𝐔’𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐎𝐏𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐑
BOKU will develop an innovative stepwise approach via the combination of indirect, non-contact #bioleaching using biologically produced sulfuric acid followed by direct, contact bioleaching with ferrous iron oxidizing bacteria. This approach will enable the step-wise recovery of different metals from mine ores and tailings. To further enhance the environmental sustainability of the process, inorganic nutrients required for bacterial growth (i.e. ferrous iron, elemental sulphur and CO2) will be sourced from industrial waste streams such as steel making by-products, sulphur leftover from biogas de-sulfurization, and industrial off-gas. The different bioleaching mechanisms will first be tested on a lab-scale followed by upscaling of selected bioleaching processes together with OPTIMINER partners.

🌿 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐨: 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐎𝐏𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐑!
The EcoCastulum team carried out a field visit to SALORO SLU to identify the most representative areas for the development of a task focused on the planting of crops with phytoremediation capacity- that is, plants capable of absorbing heavy metals and helping purify both soil and water.

During this first on-site assessment, the team:
🔍 Identified native plant species in the area with strong potential for use in phytoremediation processes.
🧪 Collected soil samples from multiple points across the site for chemical characterisation, a crucial step in evaluating their suitability for upcoming planting trials.
