@LordInosuke741 SPOILERS but shanks had a holy knight tattoo (My head cannon is that this is how emu posses people), and when Shanks met Luffy, he knew Luffy was THE ONE. So, with this theory, shanks lost his arm so emu had no control over him. Could be worded better, but makes sense to me.
