This gap may indicate a rip current, a powerful channel of water flowing away from the shore. Unlike crashing waves, rip currents often appear as darker, calmer areas with fewer whitecaps, making them deceptively inviting to swimmers.

If you're caught in a rip current, don't panic and don't try to swim directly back to shore against the flow. Instead, swim parallel to the beach, either left or right, until you escape the current. Once free, you can angle back toward shore. If you're unable to swim out, float, conserve your energy, and signal for help.

Rip currents are responsible for thousands of rescues every year and can pull even strong swimmers away from the beach. Learning how to recognize them could one day save your life or the life of someone you love.
