🇮🇪 🎸 Kurt Cobain felt a deep, spiritual connection when Nirvana toured Ireland. A belonging he couldn’t fully explain.

Samuel Cobane was born in 1823 in the townland of Dunmisk, Carrickmore. He married in St. Columbkille Church in 1854. In 1875, the family sailed for Ontario — and like thousands of Irish emigrants before them, their name was changed on the way through. Cobane became Cobain.

Their descendants drifted west to Washington State. Kurt was born in Aberdeen on February 20, 1967. A beaten down logging town on the edge of the Pacific Northwest.

When the album ‘Nevermind’ exploded in 1991, Cobain became one of the most recognizable faces on earth almost overnight. He was vocal about his contempt for the industry. While artists around him charged $75 a ticket, Nirvana kept theirs at $17

He thought his roots were in Cork. They were in Tyrone. In the graveyard behind St. Columbkille Church, the headstones still read Cobane.

A Cobane from Carrickmore became one of the defining voices of a generation. ☘️🎸
