Memory problems are one of the most common symptoms of dementia. But some memory aids and tools can help people who struggle to recall things to live more independently for longer.
As with anything, their usefulness depends on what the person is used to, and how easy they would find using something new.
So we asked people on our Dementia Support Forum what they found helpful. Hereโs what they shared:
โI hang my front door key around my neck, so I donโt forget to take it with me.โ
โI use calendars around house for things like appointments, friends coming over etc.โ
โI made a large whiteboard daily calendar with a magnetic frame soon after my diagnosis.โ
โI have a wireless audio reminder for my front door, as I had a problem leaving my front door open when going out to walk the dog.โ
โI look at the MemRabel clock screen first thing every morning. This tells me what day it is, morning or afternoon, what time it is and the date.โ
โI have a key safe, which my neighbours know in case I do forget the key.โ
What memory aids and tools do you use that you find helpful?

Do you feel that it is important to look after your mental health?
"Mental health conditions are often under-recognised in older people, and this means that they can go untreated. Sometimes this due to the stigma surrounding poor mental health in older people, meaning that those most in need do not receive help." Says our Media Officer, Stephen James.

How do you feel about working in older age?
Sadly one million people aged 50-64 would like to be in work but aren't.
It's time we made a change. Sign up to the Age-friendly Employer Pledge and show you recognise the value of older workers.
The Age-friendly Employer Pledge is a nationwide programme for UK employers who recognise the importance and value of older workers. Employers commit to improving work for people in their 50s and 60s and taking the necessary action to help them flourish in a multigenerational workforce.

As families and friends gather this Easter weekend, behavioural changes may become more apparent in loved ones who are living with undiagnosed dementia.
Whilst everyoneโs dementia journey is different, there are some signs โ common and less common โ to look out for. They can look like:
Struggling to make decisions, or making careless or risky decisions
Losing track of time and dates
Asking the same question over again, or repeating phrases
Struggling with tasks like paying bills, planning ahead, shopping
Acting inappropriately or out of character
Withdrawal or losing interest in things previously enjoyed
Becoming easily upset, irritable, or aggressive
Difficulty getting enough sleep
Symptoms of anxiety, like feeling very worried or uneasy
Feeling restless and walking about
Putting objects in unusual places
Getting lost in familiar places
Symptoms of depression, like feeling sad or hopeless
Struggling to find the right word
Difficulty judging distances or mistaking reflections or patterns for other objects
Displaying these signs and behaviours doesnโt mean that youโre definitely developing dementia. But if you recognise them in yourself or a loved one, you should discuss them with a GP.
A diagnosis can help people with dementia get the right information and support and help those close to them prepare and plan for the future.
Completing our checklist can be a helpful way to note down symptoms before talking to a GP. Download a copy via our website ๐ https://t.co/ZpAQ16wHNG
