This week on Women’s Weekly Dose, we aim to explore how entrenched gender stereotypes have historically shaped perceptions of political leadership and participation for women, girls and persons with disabilities.

Often, the idea of what women "should be" has been defined through narrow, traditional roles—caregivers, nurturers, or supportive figures rather than leaders or decision-makers. These stereotypes, though evolving, still limit women’s participation in politics, leaving decision-making power concentrated in male-dominated spaces.

But gender identities are more fluid and complex than ever acknowledged in the past. Understanding this fluidity and challenging these limiting views is essential for creating spaces where individuals, regardless of their gender, can freely participate in political processes. This involves unpacking stereotypes surrounding gender inclusion.

Why is this important for women’s political participation?
Gender mainstreaming is a strategy that ensures gender perspectives and diversity are integrated into all policy and decision-making processes. It is crucial because it acknowledges that women’s experiences, needs, and aspirations are different and must be represented in political spaces. However, mainstreaming is impossible if the political arena continues to reinforce binary and patriarchal structures.
Addressing stereotypes allows women to transcend limiting narratives and actively claim their space in leadership.

The nursing council of Nigeria has announced that all nurses must work for at least two years before they can have their documents processed if they plan to relocate abroad for work.

In my view, this is wrong, this is oppressive and it is totally unacceptable.

Nobody should be forced to stay or work in a country they do not want to.

It sounds like the government is using the council to force nurses to stay rather than sit down with the nurses to address the actual reasons why they are leaving the country.

Rather than pay nurses better;
Rather than make nursing education more accessible and attractive to many people; Rather than make nursing practice more enjoyable and fulfilling for nurses;

Their own nursing council is putting up lunatic legislation to drive its own nurses into frustration and depression.

Anyway, this is my own personal view that should the nurses decide to fight this in a law court and resist this clear madness, they wholeheartedly and completely have my complete support.
