Bill C-34 creates a social media ban for Canadians under 16 at the expense of all Canadians' privacy.
Sections 26, 27(1), and 27(2) of Bill C-34 require that affected social media platforms “implement age-verification and age-estimation measures designed to prevent a person under the age of 16 from being able to have an account with, or be otherwise registered with,” those social media platforms.
Bill C-34 requires that such measures must provide for the “protection” and eventual “destruction” of “personal information that is collected for age-verification or age-estimation purposes.”
It is not yet clear how this will be accomplished. What is clear is that these measures must be “effective.” Users commonly verify their age by submitting government-issued identification documents, such as driver’s licenses or passports. And, the technology exists for social media platforms to estimate the ages of users through biometric data, e.g., facial geometry, eye shape, skin elasticity, hairline, etcetera.
This age-verification and age-estimation monitoring will not be limited to Canadians under age 16. For social media platforms to determine access eligibility for any user, platforms will have to evaluate the access eligibility of every user.
The goal of Bill C-34 is not merely to remove Canadians under age 16 from affected social media platforms but to keep them off those platforms. To achieve this goal, social media platforms may be compelled to adopt ongoing age-verification/estimation measures to ensure continued compliance.
However affected social media platforms satisfy these requirements, Bill C-34 fundamentally reimagines how all Canadians access social media.
This Bill deputizes affected social media platforms into forcing Canadians to surrender more data as a precondition of participation in the digital public square. This, in turn, raises serious concerns about Canadians' privacy rights and may engage constitutional protections against unreasonable search and seizure - guaranteed by section 8 of the Charter.

All you Black activists got Karmelo Anthony 35 yrs with your ignorance to our Black youth. "Prohibitions against youth social media use seem almost inevitable. But having boomer and gen X politicians regulating the online behaviour of a generation that’s grown up in the digital era feels like dinosaurs trying to control the climate," writes Jesse Kline https://t.co/C2k2MmDpck
The Digital Safety Act is expected tomorrow with a "temporary" under-16 social media ban. I've gathered my analysis of the ban, age verification, and mandated ID into one FAQ. The short version: it won't work and creates serious privacy risks for all.

FACT: Not a single adolescent on the face of this planet is capable of consenting to being sterilised.
Everything we know about adolescent development tells us that this life stage is defined by experimentation and change.
It is a period of identity exploration, when young people try on different selves — when beliefs are held with passionate conviction one day, only to be discarded the next.
And because we know that adolescents do not have fixed, stable identities, we should also know that permanent, irreversible medical interventions that imprint adolescent identities onto the body could never be appropriate or ethical.
Paediatric gender medicine is a terrible medical crime. In my opinion, it's the worst medical scandal in history.
Videos of an annual Sikh religious procession in Brampton, Ont., are going viral after Khalistan separatist activists displayed images of child suicide bombers with explosive devices strapped to their chests and depictions of Indian tanks being destroyed.

WATCH: Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX): Your organization said that restricting and banning abortion is a tool that the far right uses to maintain white supremacy. Do you believe that pro-lifers are white supremacist?”
SPLC CEO Bryan Fair: “Ummm, I believe that reproductive liberty is... I can’t answer that question yes or no.”
Brandon Gill: “How many babies that are in the United States that are aborted are black?”
Bryan Fair: *Speechless*
Brandon Gill: “About 40% of abortions nationwide are of black babies—blacks represent about 13% of the population. Does that sound like something a white supremacist would oppose?”
I love this guy!
It seems we are entering the violence zone of the white guilt racial order.
This response is tribal and has no place in the Western world. Our white guilt leaders will seize upon this violence as proof that they must double down on their anti-racist policies. They will say, "Oh, look at those racists. We knew all along." They will never see their own complicity in creating this monster.
For years, these elites made certain questions unspeakable. They called you a racist if you pointed out policy failures. If you saw patterns or told the truth, you were a bigot. Now it looks like the words have stopped. So we shouldn't be surprised when force fills the void where honest speech was denied.
Will these elites ever admit that what they built was not redemption but a new tribalism? One that they sacrificed cohesion and colorblindness not for justice, but for their own selfish innocence? And that is worth what?
Wagner holds press conferences like this one every year to lecture Canadians that criticizing court decisions amounts to portraying judges “as partisan actors, or described as obstacles to the will of the people.”
But if the judiciary wants to be “sheltered from all politicization,” maybe the Chief Justice shouldn’t be holding press conferences wading into political debates.
You can’t appoint yourself a public commentator and then claim immunity from public criticism. Canadians have every right to object when courts invent rights found nowhere in the constitutional text or effectively legislate from the bench.
Bill C-16 would make mandatory minimum sentences for most crimes optional. It would be even weaker on punishment than the status quo while undermining the work of Parliament. Of course they voted against it.
Can’t emphasize this enough as online harms bill coming this week: a “temporary” ban on social media for kids still requires ID for everyone and a regulatory infrastructure to enforce. Once in place with all its privacy risks, there is no turning back.

What kind of country or leader accuses the political opposition of being sponsored by foreigners?
Of being agents of foreign powers?
Of being disloyal to the nation because they criticise government policy?
Type it into your search engine.
Russia. Hitler. Stalin. Cuba. North Korea. Iran. China.
And Canada.
The Liberal Party calls Conservatives MAGA-aligned foreign sympathisers regularly.
The BC NDP called the new BC Conservative leader MAGA North within hours of their election.
This isn't about left or right anymore.
It's about: Can you still criticize your government without being silenced?
Canada now has full-time workers living in Highway 401 carpool parking lots.
They're not unemployed. They're not refusing to work. They're working, showering, sleeping in trailers, and hoping to save enough for first and last month's rent.
Meanwhile politicians celebrate population growth, record housing targets, and labour shortages.
The reality is working Canadians are being priced out of their own country.
So we went from:
-Abortion should be legal for cases of rape an incest (which only accounts for less than 1% of all abortions)
To
-Abortion should be legal for mothers whose health is in danger by carrying the baby
To
-Abortion should be legal for all people as long as the pregnancy is caught early
To
-Abortion should be legal up until 9 months
To
-It is a fetus, not a human. It’s not a human until it’s out of the womb
To
-A baby in the womb is a parasite
To
-A child is better off being killed in the womb than to be born into a poor family who can’t afford it or possibly end up in foster care
To
-We should test for any abnormality in the womb and completely eradicate those people who could have a disability and might require some extra care
When will people admit that the pro abortion argument is, and always has been, evil?
With the upcoming social media ban bill, what the government appears to be saying is: "You are too stupid to use the tools Apple and Google provide FOR FREE to control what your kids have access to online, so we will do it for you."
That in itself is insulting, but that's not the true aim of this government. They couldn't give a single solitary hockey puck about that. The true aim is quite simple: Force social networks, and then all other online service providers to ID all users (with 3D face scans). Then:
- Bill C-22 forces providers to keep this data for 12 months, and make it available to the government.
- Bill C-9 criminalizes what you can and cannot say online, with penalties up to 10 years and seizure of assets.
- Bill C-8 allows a random government bureaucrat to cut you off the Internet, no court order needed.
Together these bills create a dystopian nightmare Orwell could not even imagine. Here is a scenario.
You post criticism of a government policy. Government calls it 'hate material'. C-22 metadata retention flags your activity and hands your identity and metadata (contacts, timings, locations) to authorities. You get prosecuted under C-9, facing up to 10 years in prison and asset seizures. A bureaucrat also issues a C-8 order cutting you off the internet entirely, while you await trial. Not that you care, as you're probably in jail, likely with no bail.
This post can likely be labeled "hate speech" given how loose and ambiguous the standards are.
