@The_Davos_Man Under international law a country that allows attacks to be launched from its territory is not neutral, from a jus ad bellum standpoint the uk is to Iran as Belarus is to Ukraine, not saying that they are the same morally just that legally the UK is at war with Iran
@yuanyi_z They were certainly fighting for empire, but there was messaging in ww1 that they were there to save Europe, particularly Belgium which was largely occupied
*note deleted earlier reply due to typo, do know Vimy Ridge was ww1, was referencing WW1 Belgian occupation
@The_Davos_Man I wonder what it would take for a treaty change to allow Canada to pursue full membership, I know that right now we are dependent on the US for trade, but if commentators are right and we can’t pivot or shift our economy to other markets then trump is right about our sovereignity
@JJ_McCullough I agree the paragraph is sloppy, but the obvious areas for negotiation with the EU are labour and student mobility given we already can travel for tourism visa free
@BenWoodfinden Don’t agree with the idea we are perpetually bound to the US economically, lots of countries have close geography but don’t trade, sure it makes it easier to trade with the us but if Canada is so dependent it can’t write off US trade then trump is right and we should be a state
@aaron_renn Trump is on record saying he wants Chinese companies to build cars in the USA, the US has no problem trading with china themselves, they just want to control other countries’ relations with china
@CarsonJerema I mean we need to stop pretending NAFTA/CUSMA isn’t dead. It is defunct and is not coming back, only other options are EU or china and at least the EU makes binding commitments, hence the requirement for states to pool sovereignty
@yyz_otp@jkenney I would say that if Canada is a vassal it is post-national by definition as our nation ceases to have independent agency or purpose and is simply a tool of a real nation, while history has shown a population that begins as a disparate group of migrants can be forged into a nation
@colewhogan No, a Canada with a population base of 40 million will never be able to resist pressures emanating from the USA, we need a larger market and while a larger population is not sufficient for that, it is necessary, you cannot have one without the other in any meaningful sense
@MichelleRempel We will never be able to withstand pressures from the USA with a population base of 40 million, we need a larger population and we need it yesterday
@SebGuti_ A population base of 40 million will never be able to hold its own against a power of 350 million on its border, that math will never check out, Canada needs way more people and it needs them yesterday
@9Occupant61029@jkenney You cannot expect a melting pot to be automatic, people look at immigration and ask why generation cultural integration doesn’t happen immediately, you have to allow a melting pot time to work
@JohnArgus5@jkenney Did we project more power? before the 60s were were firmly part of the British empire which prevented us from being pressured by the Americans in this manner, but we were a part of the larger whole, we never faced off against a major power alone with 20 million
