Still waiting for the condemnation statements from the GCC and other Middle Eastern states over the killing of Iranian civilians at a wedding by American bombs.

Condemning the killing of civilians should be a non-issue. Sectarian politics should never determine whose suffering deserves empathy.

And yet it has to be said: Sirik County is a largely Sunni Muslim community - just as Minab school was.

So where is the outrage from Sunni Muslim leaders?

I have long stopped being shocked by headlines in Western mainstream media. But every once in a while, I am forced to rediscover my capacity to be stunned.

Here is how the BBC reported on the US bombing Iran and killing people at a wedding.

According to Iranian media, this is the 4-year-old boy who was killed in the US airstrikes that hit a wedding party in Southern Iran on Tuesday, not far from the elementary school where the US killed more than 150 school children on the first day of Trump's war of choice.

The son of the former Shah, Reza Pahlavi, pushed for this war, and his supporters still dance in the streets to celebrate it.

The United States just bombed a wedding in Kuhestak, Iran murdering multiple people and injuring more than 50 others.

Theodor Herzl was not a 'secular jew' or an 'atheist jew'.

He explicitly viewed himself as a chosen, messianic figure executing a divine spiritual mission.

He wrote about his messianic dreams, celebrated jewish holidays, and was affiliated to a synagogue.

He belonged to Neolog Judaism: a religious stream that intentionally modernised outer practices.

In his primary political manifesto, The Jewish State (1896), he dedicated a whole chapter to the role of religion in a future country. He wrote: 'We shall recognise our integration only by our faith. We shall create a home for our people, and the faith of our fathers will be our guide'.

In December 1897 in Die Welt, he described his deep personal, spiritual return to the ancient faith through lighting the Hanukkah candles.

At the end of his speech at the sixth zionist congress in 1903, he raised his right hand and recited Psalm 137:5 in Hebrew to prove his true allegiance:

'If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither [or 'forget its skill'].'

So where did the 'secular' framing come from?

When Herzl launched political zionism, a minority of anti-zionist Orthodox rabbis were threatened by him. They didn't want him hijacking their religious authority. They branded him as 'assimilated' and 'non-believing'.

Ironically, the mainstream zionist movement accepted and protected this label as an international public relations shield.

Why?

They knew that if the international community, European empires or the United Nations viewed zionism as a fanatical, literal religious and messianic movement seeking to fulfill biblical prophecy, it would be rejected as dangerous religious extremism.

It is deeply disappointing to see America’s senior-most representative to Israel @USAmbIsrael speak so disparagingly—and inaccurately—about Qatar, a Major Non-NATO Ally and key strategic partner of the United States.

For the record, once again: Qatar has nothing to do with antisemitism or anti-Israel sentiment on American college campuses. These allegations have been examined repeatedly and have not been substantiated at all. I and many others have addressed this point, repeatedly. Before the Senate Armed Services Committee, then Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines made clear there was no evidence linking Qatar to the campus protests in question.

The overwhelming majority of Qatar’s funding to these institutions supports the operation of their campuses in Qatar. These are large, fully functioning universities educating students in Qatar and across the region through American academic institutions and American educational standards. Because these are American universities, the funds generally flow through and are reported by their U.S.-based institutions. But that does not mean the money is being spent to influence students or political discourse on campuses in the United States. Once the costs associated with operating these campuses in Qatar are separated from the headline figures, Qatar’s direct philanthropic giving to universities inside the United States is comparatively limited.
