My dad died yesterday aged 73. I wasn’t sure whether to share this but if it brings attention to an illness too few people understand, perhaps it belongs here.

A London cabbie & lifelong Spurs supporter, he was there for every one of my brothers’ and his grandsons’ football matches. I once represented him at the Carriage Office for bad driving; I loved him but the prosecution had a case…

My parents divorced when I was little so I did not grow up with him at home. We were very different men. I loved opera and all its drama; he loved Tottenham and cigarettes. We both took people as we found them and we both loved women, though in rather different ways. I never once doubted his pride in me. When I came out he responded with magnificent indifference: I was still his son, there was nothing else to discuss.

In the last years of his life Jewish Care became his home, a place where dignity and tenderness were practised every day. Walid and Tosin, among so many others there, cared for him and came to kiss him goodbye. A Jewish man, held in his final days by people of different faiths: a quiet reminder that what is sacred in us is also what we share. He died with his family around him, loved and held to the last.

Shana Grice was 19. She asked Sussex Police for help five times in six months. They fined her.

That is why her mother is standing outside this police station holding Shana’s photograph.

Michael Lane tracked Shana’s car, assaulted her and stole a key to enter her bedroom. Once, she hid under the duvet listening to him breathe.

But because Shana had not initially disclosed their past relationship, an officer gave her a £90 fine for “wasting police time”.

The trial judge later said police had “jumped to conclusions” and stereotyped her. The police watchdog found that the officer’s actions affected Shana’s confidence and may have stopped her reporting Lane’s continued harassment.

On 25 August 2016, Lane entered Shana’s home and murdered her. He was jailed for life with a minimum of 25 years.

One former officer was found to have committed gross misconduct and was barred from policing. Another committed misconduct. Sussex Police apologised and changed its procedures.

Shana went to the people meant to protect her. Their response taught a frightened teenager that asking again could get her punished.

That failure was indefensible.

Janine Powell ran a Post Office branch in Tiverton, Devon. In 2007 @PostOffice bosses accused her of stealing £74,000. Their own courts later found the Post Office knew its Horizon system had bugs from the earliest days of its operation. They prosecuted her anyway.

Post Office lawyers offered her a deal, plead guilty to false accounting and they would drop the theft charge.

She said no, she wasn't pleading guilty to something she hadn't done.

So they took her to trial in Exeter in 2008 and got their conviction. The judge gave her 18 months. She walked into prison two days after her daughter's 10th birthday.

She served five months behind bars, then three more wearing an electronic tag. She left three children behind, aged 10 to 18, in the care of friends because their mother was in a cell instead of at home.

She came out with a criminal record that made her unemployable, a hometown she felt too ashamed to walk through, and depression that pushed her toward suicide.

This was never a rogue glitch nobody noticed. The Court of Appeal later ruled the Post Office "consistently asserted that Horizon was robust and reliable" and "steamrolled over" any subpostmaster who challenged it, calling the prosecutions an affront to the conscience of the court.

Post Office lawyers hid evidence of Horizon's faults from courts, prosecutors and defence teams, to protect the organisation at all costs.

Powell's conviction was quashed in 2022, one of hundreds overturned in what is now Britain's widest miscarriage of justice.

More than 700 sub-postmasters were prosecuted between 1999 and 2015 by an organisation that knew its own evidence was rotten and used it anyway.

Janine Powell has given evidence to the ongoing public inquiry. More than 45 people connected to the scandal are now under criminal investigation.

Still, nobody who signed off on her prosecution has spent a night in the cell they sent her to.
