For decades, Pakistan’s politics has been like a carefully scripted stage play. Behind the velvet curtains sits the real power, the establishment, pulling the strings, deciding the story, and swapping out actors when needed.

The formula has always been the same. Pick a crowd-puller, give them the spotlight, keep the nation’s eyes fixed on them, and carry on with the real agenda behind the scenes. In the 70s, it was Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the man who could electrify a crowd with a single speech. When he was gone, Nawaz Sharif was brought in to play the lead.

But entertainment is not just about applause. Sometimes you need fear, tension, and drama to keep the audience hooked. Altaf Hussain became the master of that role, dominating urban Sindh with his fiery words.

And it is not just political actors who are part of this script. The same machine recruits faces from the media, television, theatre, and cinema, familiar celebrities who know how to sway public emotions. They play their part by siding with the chosen political figure whenever needed, giving the illusion of “independent” support. We used to hear conspiracy theories about how the Illuminati controlled Hollywood and the world’s celebrities. Maybe there was some truth to it, in the sense that global agendas trickle down to different establishments across the world, and when they hire these actors, it’s as if the Illuminati itself is dictating their lines.

Then came a new hero, Imran Khan. The cricketing legend with a clean image was perfect to keep the masses engaged. But politics thrives on conflict, so counter-figures were also placed: Maryam Nawaz to challenge Khan’s popularity, and side characters like Sher Afzal Marwat and Manzoor Pashteen to stir trouble and confront the state. Militants like BLA and TTP were the permanent villains, giving the state reasons to act, and the people something to fear. It was a never-ending show, loud, dramatic, and distracting.

But then, something happened that the scriptwriters never expected.
Imran Khan stopped playing the role they wrote for him. Instead of staying on stage as a performer, he stepped into the crowd and stood with the people. He began exposing the entire spectacle, the machinery, the manipulation, the illusion.

For the first time in our history, millions of Pakistanis started looking past the blinding stage lights. They began to see the shadowy figures behind the curtain. And once you see the truth, you cannot unsee it.

The establishment scrambled. They threw in new faces. They created new dramas. They even tried dragging India into the plot to capture attention again. But it did not work. The people were no longer clapping on cue.

The curtain is slipping. The spectacle is collapsing.
And for the first time, the directors of Pakistan’s political theatre are losing control of their own play.

This is not just a political moment. This is history breaking in real time.
