Whatever the Environment Agency says, we *will* restore our river…

Volunteers were back out on the River Roding this weekend, ignoring the threats & lies of @EnvAgency, to battle against the odds to restore a part of the river that the authorities have left to die. The stretch of the Roding around Ilford has some of the worst problems on the river: rubbish and invasive species on its banks; sewage in its water; and huge amounts of rubbish & debris in the channel. I applied for funding from the Mayor to sort out this part of the river (which would have paid for floating barges and skips), but having been rejected twice, I decided we should just get on with it.

This is not an easy part of the river to clean, as the water is deep in places & the high concrete banks means it’s impossible to get large objects out of the river in most places. Luckily, our previous clearance of the area north of ilford bridge in May gave us an exit point, and I brought up a large rowboat and canoe. Teams in waders could load these boats with rubbish & then float them to be unloaded & the waste taken up onto the road. As some of the debris was deeply buried in the mud, we set up a winch on one of the trees to haul it out. We got an unbelievable array of crap from the river: a TV, mattress, shopping trolleys, pipes, traffic cones, random bits of metal and even a bench, which is now cleaned off and offers a place to sit beside the river.

This section of river- right in the centre of Ilford- could be genuinely lovely. Whilst it’s in a desperate state, we saw large mullet, dragonflies and reedbeds slowly returning along the edge where we had removed invasive species. There’s still much to do though. The moment we talk about changing 'behaviour' without considering the context of that behaviour, we are doomed to failure. We will put in place ever harsher consequences, and they will work less and less well.

That's because behaviour never exists in a vacuum. It's part of a complex system.

Behaviour is a response to circumstances and as such, it provides feedback on how a system is working.
If levels of disruptive behaviour are high in our schools, then something isn't right for our young people. Young people do well if they can - and lots of this generation can't right now.

Perhaps it's that years of under-funding plus a pandemic have resulted in a generation who don't believe that school will give them a passport to a better life.

Perhaps it's that our system is overly focused on exams which a third fail.

Perhaps its that our curriculum doesn't enable young people to study things that interest them.

There will not be one single cause. That's part of the complex system. It will be many things together and they will all interact.

Teachers will have much better ideas that me about what those things are. But it won't just be 'young people haven't learnt how to behave '. That's a reductionist explanation, and this is a complex system.

It would be convenient for everyone if those complex problems would be solved by suspending and isolating enough children, but evidence suggests that that won't improve behaviour and will have long term negative consequences for those children.

Complexity is inconvenient, but if we don't embrace it, we're doomed to repeat the errors of the past. Behaviour is part of a complex system.

Por eso las fuertes políticas anti inmigración, los campos de concentración para inmigrantes, los miles de naufragos muertos, por eso el tapón del Darién, por eso los bloqueos económicos a los países rebeldes.

La derecha de occidente ve la solución a la crisis climática, como una "solución final", la derecha vuelve a soñar con Hitler y conquista la mayoría de los pueblos ricos y arios de occidente y nuestras oligarquías latinoamericanas, que no ven otro mundo en donde vivir que el de los "malls" de la Florida o de Madrid.

Las derechas del sur usan la violencia, quebrantan la democracia, se sienten, por el norte, legitimados para ello. Creen que pueden matar y hacer genocidios, solo necesitan la bendición del poder mundial.

Vamos a la barbarie sino cambiamos el poder. La vida de la humanidad y sobre todo de los pueblos del sur, depende de la manera como la humanidad escoja el camino para superar la crisis climática producida por la riqueza del norte. Gaza es solo el primer experimento para considerarnos a todos y todas desechables.
