I went to visit my uncle this afternoon.
But he has really bashed me.
That my clock is ticking, yet I do not own a ranch.
He wondered where I take my money, and yet I do not drink.
I kept quiet the whole time.
Then he finally dropped the line I had been waiting for.
- Jitetee sasa. What is your excuse?
I immediately pulled out my phone. Opened my investment app. And handed it to him.
Then told him:
- Uncle, what you are looking at is my portfolio of shares in great companies. Nataka ifike mita siku moja.
He listened very keenly. I thought I was finally about to receive the legendary: Congratulations my son.
Instead, he leaned back. Looked at me. Then asked.
- That's OK. But what are stocks and shares in Kikuyu?
I had never thought about it. I froze.
He told me to take my time.
Eventually, I gave up. And told him to answer his own question.
He smiled. Then said.
- Stocks and shares do not have a name in Kikuyu or any African languages.
- The colonizers invented these fancy slogans to make brokies think they are becoming wealthy by accumulating papers and numbers on screens.
- Meanwhile, they themselves are accumulating the real assets.
I asked him: What are real assets?
He replied:
- Land.
- Animals.
- Plants and foods.
- Water bodies et al
Things you can actually touch. These are the things that create wealth.
Then he concluded with a sentence that has refused to leave my head.
• Every African man must own real assets.
Is the old man right or wrong?
This is what I have learned over the years.
• Tax laws are not always as clear as lawyers make them sound.
Taxes are complex because they involve:
- Law
- Accounting
- Politics
- Business acumen and,
- Ujanja
It is extremely rare to find all these in one person.
So for serious offshore structuring, build a team of:
- Lawyer (must have)
- Accountant (must have)
- Tax strategist (must have)
- Coffee server (nice to have )
Let them talk. Let them challenge each other. Let them understand your full picture.
This combination is hard to go wrong.
In the end,
They shall create a structure so tough that tax authorities shall cry trying to crack it.
Have a blessed weekend!

Diversification is the most misunderstood word in investing.”
Most investors think owning five stocks is diversification.
It’s not.
You need to diversify across asset classes, geographies, and sectors.
This way, when one asset class underperforms, the others can cushion your portfolio.
Now, If there was ever a man who would be deeply disappointed by Us, Kenyans for electing Dr William S Ruto as our president in 2022, it would be Billionaire Jacob Juma. And not just disappointed, he would probably rise from the grave, shake his head in disgust, and then go right back, realizing we never learn.
Jacob Juma spent his days on Twitter, now X screaming at us to open our eyes, warning us about Ruto, even swearing that he’d leave the country if Ruto was elected. Sadly he never left, but he was sent off in a far worse way.
Born in 1971 to a humble couple in Mungore Village, Bungoma County, Juma’s life began like that of any other struggling village boy: dusty feet, high hopes, and a dream too big for his small hometown. He started school in Bungoma and later joined Bungoma High School. His brilliance landed him in Nairobi, where he enrolled at Kenya Polytechnic (now TUK). But as fate would have it, academics took a backseat when he caught the eye of political kingpins Chris Okemo and Cyrus Jirongo. They saw potential in the sharp-witted young man from Bungoma and took him under their wings.
It was through this political mentorship that Juma introduced William Ruto to Cyrus Jirongo.
Juma's proximity to power turned his pockets from empty to overflowing. By 24, he was not just a young wealthy man but a gun-wielding one, having received a firearm license in 1995. He soon re-enrolled at the University of Nairobi for a Finance degree, probably realizing that managing all that money required more than just gut instinct.
By the late ’90s and early 2000s, while still in campus, Juma was already making power moves. He bought land worth Ksh 9 million from the President’s son, Jonathan Moi. That land would later host the King Business Park on Mombasa Road. A well-oiled network of political friends, including Sirisia MP John Waluke, who not only guaranteed his business loans but also ended up in jail for allegedly defrauding the government.
With deep pockets and deeper ambitions, Juma built a palace in Karen named Mungore Palace, after his village. He also established an equally lavish home in Bungoma. When he wasn’t basking in the glory of his wealth with his wife, he was indulging in Nairobi’s finest imported entertainment exotic baddies in a Westlands apartment he shared with a minister. If political deals were his breakfast, leisure was most definitely his dinner.
But fate, like a jealous ex, had other plans. In 2005, Juma found himself in court, facing off against none other than Jennifer Jemutai Moi, the President’s daughter. She accused him of grabbing her Theta Tea Farm in Nandi. The courtroom drama was intense, but Juma, ever the survivor, had bigger plans.
In 2012, he struck gold, literally. Through Cortec Mining Ltd, he helped a Canadian company acquire a license to mine Niobium at Mrima Hills. This was a Ksh 6 trillion contract, with Juma securing a 30% cut as a director. This was the jackpot that changed him from a quiet deal-maker to a relentless whistleblower.
The government, however, had different ideas. No sooner had they met with President Uhuru in Mombasa than their mining license was revoked. An infuriated Juma pointed fingers, claiming Najib Balala had demanded an Ksh 80 million bribe. This was Juma’s first major public expose. The whistle had been blown, and the wolves were watching.
If he wasn’t going to eat, he must ensure no one else would. First on his list? His old acquaintance then Deputy President, William Ruto. He exposed Ruto as the real owner of Weston Hotel, which was allegedly grabbing Lang'ata Primary School’s land. Ruto, through his lawyer Grand Mulla, denied the allegations in January 2015. But Juma came armed with receipts, personally funding a lawsuit to reclaim the land. He even produced documents proving Minister Francis Muthaura had warned about the grab as early as 2003.
How he got those documents? Weather they were genuine?Nobody knows.
